East of Eden TV series. After much agonising (actually 10 mins of calm deliberation) I've decided to read the novel first. Did this with Les Misérables a couple of years ago and haven't bothered watching any screen adaptations since, a hard act to follow. Book first, Florence Pugh second.

Really happy to learn today that our local free library is to be open four days a week instead of three. It was under threat of closure a couple of years ago. This has been achieved through a big effort of volunteers preserving the vestiges of what we term as civilisation. Well done Stirchley!

Just finished the 10th & final Rath-Roman by Volker Kutscher. Have really been enthralled by this whirlpool of history & fiction covering Germany 1928-38. Had no idea how he would end the saga, & plenty aren't happy but for me it worked. Sadly those times have so much in common with today's.

Really enjoyed the first episode of The Doll on Netflix. It's based on the classic Bolesław Prus novel, which I have on a bookshelf somewhere, but unread. Well at least I did read Les Misérables en français, before watching Les Mis! There's a lot of classics to get through!

I'm a bit bonkers about this sort of thing, the first history book I owned was about Pompeii, my walk home from school took me through the remains of Metchley Roman fort before the modern developments. Spent a day (only) in Pompeii dragging my poor wife across the town under the hot August sun.

What on earth is happening?

This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.
