Wednesday's ‘An Evening with Liza Lehmann’ at 1901 Arts Club included the composer's 1896 song-cycle In a Persian Garden with singers Ellie Laugharne, Katie Bray, Nick Pritchard & Frederick Long. Michael Waldron presided at the pianoforte. An Orchid Classics recording follows.

Such a great idea: composer Michael Betteridge has taken Vaughan Williams’ one-act opera of JM Synge’s Riders to the Sea and replaced the large orchestra with 3 players on atmospheric accordion, oboe and clarinets including a luscious bass one.
