Transformer time. Just trained a small transformer (NanoGPT) using Anneal. Examples added to repo! georgebuilds.github.io/anneal/tutor...

anneal: tutorial
Step-by-step tutorial: install anneal, train nanoGPT on Shakespeare, and run GPT-2-small forward. Covers WebGPU prereqs, asset download cache, the BPE tokenizer, and a compiler-level walkthrough.

Anneal is a Go ML compiler. Graph rewrites, rangeify indexing, iterative rewrite driver handles deep graphs without stack exhaustion. WebGPU on Metal. Heavily inspired by tinygrad. github.com/georgebuilds/anneal

However inadvisable, I am porting tinygrad to pure Go. AMA.

why is so much of the pds docs related to bsky? in the installer(.)sh file alone it references URLs to the bsky appview & others. what happens if in future ppl wanna self host without using bluesky at all?

Bridgy Fed fans, big news: accounts bridged into Bluesky can now use custom domain handles! Also, if you deactivate bridging, you can now undo it and bring back your bridged Bluesky account. And much more! snarfed.org/2024-10-29_5...

atproto decouples data hosting from applications. this is possible because all data is signed — so every app can verify that you have actually written the posts the app received and they weren’t tampered with in transit comparing atproto with AP verbally is hard because AP couples hosting and apps

Honestly, NFTs are cool too. Liquidity positions are NFTs in many AMMs. And they're interesting primitives for things like licensure and protocol governance. It's the monkey pictures and gambling, specifically, that is dumb. Ppl get hung about what's effectively a row in a decentralized database

Similarly, I wish Ethereum dot org was on here, because right now the official face of the world's Ledger of Record on this app is @ethereum.bsky.social which is not only ~not~ official, but a token-shilling handle squatter @timbeiko.bsky.social

To be fair, Monero hasn't, and it's probably the most important from a civil rights perspective (for now), but the carbon footprint is negligible compared to Bitcoin

People can totally worry about bsky going bad! But actually do something about it. Bring your own username domain rather than borrowing bsky’s Get together with friends & run your own PDS. Use a different client if you like. Your data is yours even on the Bsky PDS and migration is built in.

Brother, a blockchain implies cryptoeconomic consensus. You're confusing the fact that there are blocks, and the word "ledger," with something very different

PLC actually stands for placeholder, and even with the emerging "Public Ledger of Credentials" name for the DID method, it's just a DID method and this has nothing to do with blockchain or even cryptoeconomics. Atproto could've used did:ethereum but chose not to.

more than that — the AT Protocol works for storing other types of data too (up to the app developer), not just Bluesky posts here’s my data on the AT Protocol: atproto-browser.vercel.app/at/danabra.mov. note it includes Bluesky app data, but also data from smokesignal.events and from frontpage.fyi

everyone whos ever thought about building a social app but realised it is virtually impossible to do so because bootstrapping a new social graph is such a high barrier for users, suddenly get presented with a free social graph that they can build upon.

atproto is designed from its core to minimize "value capture", while maximizing "value creation". this is the exact opposite of what most VCs look for, and to me that implies that anyone investing in Bluesky genuinely believes in its potential for social good

ATProtocol itself is great, and I think people generally understand the value of owning your data as it is stored in your PDS. What I think doesn't get enough attention is that your PDS is also your source of identity with OAuth, and that really is game-changing.
