Nothing better demonstrates (to me, at least) the subjectivity of taste better than that many people whose taste and judgment I respect esteem Vertigo.

One of the greatest movie reviews of all time is Roger Ebert's review of North. I don't recall people chiding him for being too mean, or too "personal".

Happy Pride to this Caravaggio self-portrait that made one man so gay he had to go to the hospital
Caravaggio's Baccus painting, featuring a lush fruity spread and leaves bedecking a pasty twink who only works out his armsArticle screenshot that says:

The most extreme examples of
Stendhal syndrome share a sensation of
self-fragmentation. Magherini
describes the case of a 53-year-old
German man who was hospitalized
after repeatedly viewing Caravaggio's
Bacchus at Uffizi Gallery. The patient
felt "an attraction closer and closer to
an intimate sexual arousal of
ambiguous nature that invaded him
and made him feel good and bad."
Unmoored and distressed, he sought
medical attention. After treating the
subject's initial episode, Magherini
writes that he came to recognize his
latent homosexuality. Another case...

Post from @figgled

It's kinda fucked that musicians eat sandwiches by placing them inside trombones and honking them into each other's mouths

Post from skirtsuit-angel

this is an example of defamiliarization, where something totally normal, conventional, and ordinary - like honkwiching - is taken and described as something that sounds weird and foreign

Okay, but when people with consistently poor judgment finally realize some things that people with far better judgment saw clearly long ago, that doesn’t make the poor-judgment people the right ones to take seriously going forward. People are mad at the guy for good reason.

This morning, @wellgoshacs.bsky.social asked me “what’s the mantra?”, expecting the response “the horrors persist but so do we.” I had just woken up so instead I said “Uh… spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered? Ride now, ride now, ride for ruin and the world’s ending? Death? Death!”

"Much Ado About Nothing: Unmotivating "Gender Identity"" by Hernandez and Bell gives @floralashes.bsky.social a run for their money in the "best/funniest footnote in a paper on transness" category. Paper: journals.publishing.umich.edu/ergo/article...
A screenshot from a scholarly paper.

The text reads: "On this picture, questions about the legitimacy of various gender classifications are both descriptive and normative. There is no context-independent fact of the matter about who is a man, a woman, or a sinner. 16 These things depend on contingent and localized social realities. As a result, our theoretical approach to gender is always guided by normative commitments—whether we are aware of that or not. Questions about which classification practices we ought to accept are not just about how the social world is organized, but about how it ought to be."

Footnote 16, referenced above, reads: "16. Ah, yes, the three genders."

Mayor Brandon Scott has reduced crime in Baltimore by 62%, and now has the lowest homicide rate in Baltimore history. How did he do it? NOT be spending more on police. He did it by MAJOR investment in afterschool and literacy programs. Socialism works
