Community is formed through surplus. Not of money, but of energy. Time. Attention. Common values. A button in your junk drawer that would look good on someone’s cardigan. Advice from your old boss that someone in a new role could use. Pressing for details when someone says they’re “fine” but aren’t.

If you’re a member of the *Struggles to Take a Compliment Club*, exercise can be an incredible practice. You don’t have to gas yourself up, you just have to accurately and dispassionately describe what’s happening.

Are barbell squats and deadlifts essential and awesome OR dangerous and/or overhyped. Here’s some clarity: Bodies adapt to stresses… within reason. That means that even questionable technique is less problematic than doing too much too soon.

As a dad 20+ year fitness guy (trainer/coach & studio owner), I never use exercise as punishment: * You're late to class? The punishment is that you've missed some class * Conditioning isn't good enough? If you care about that as an athlete, we can work in some ways that don't totally suck

It's impossible to live in this culture and not regularly come face-to-face with money — as a measure, as a construct, as a concept, and as a hard-limit. It is impossible to be completely rational about money because of all of that weight and complexity. So, where does this leave us as parents?
