Perverts, cast aside your Meta glasses. This harkens a return to simpler days.

Parallel play. Bringing coffee. Speaking up. Asking to borrow something or insisting on lending something. Rephrasing what someone said so you can be sure that you understand. Supporting and being supported. And doing hard things together.

Community is formed through surplus. Not of money, but of energy. Time. Attention. Common values. A button in your junk drawer that would look good on someone’s cardigan. Advice from your old boss that someone in a new role could use. Pressing for details when someone says they’re “fine” but aren’t.

Your writing is excellent and my only wish for you, aside from continuing to do work you care about, is that the capricious luck of commercial success will touch you frequently enough to keep things moving along.

If you’re a member of the *Struggles to Take a Compliment Club*, exercise can be an incredible practice. You don’t have to gas yourself up, you just have to accurately and dispassionately describe what’s happening.

Meanwhile, if you still care about squats and deadlifts, you can perfect your technique and build your capacity while you use them as assistance exercises. /

You can replace them with single leg variations, but you have to take these exercises seriously and load them as aggressively as you would their barbell variations. Loaded carries and other simple exercises can load the trunk separately – and with less risk.

There’s something about the implement that just works for their bodies. And it’s totally the opposite with other people. Barbell loading can be too restrictive or too focussed for some. Are either of these lifts essential? No, like Pez, they are totally dispensable.

Long femurs and long trunks, for example, both introduce their own complications. Range of motion in shoulders and hips also vary. And that’s before we even get into individual injury history. Some people perform beautifully with a barbell.

Geoff Girvitz @geoffgirvitz.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
And that’s where things get messy. Most people are better off, pulling from blocks or performing a rack deadlift variation. Even with more weight on the bar. But, with as with the back squat, technique can very quite a bit. Meanwhile, bodies also vary.

As for deadlifts, I personally think pulling from the floor is a bad idea unless you have excellent mobility in a deep squat position. Without that range of motion in your hips, you’re going to have to borrow it from somewhere else.

Loading beyond your strength is easy. Especially if you have unrealistic expectations, like going up in weight every single week. As for deadlifts, I personally think pulling from the floor is a bad idea unless you have excellent mobility in a deep squat position.

Zercher squats. And then non-barbell variations, like double rack position kettlebell front squats and sandbag squats. It’s tough to do any of these without good form. But a barbell back squat? Ugly reps are easy.

That’s the human part of this. That’s the part that produces a lot of unforced errors. And then there are the exercises themselves… Some squat variations are tough to mess up. Rack position front squats and

But then there’s the internal (human) factor… Sometimes, we get overly ambitious – or even greedy – about how much weight to throw on the bar. We compare ourselves to others or to outside standards, instead of accurately assessing what we have to bring on a given day.

Geoff Girvitz @geoffgirvitz.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
Loading appropriately is a bigger challenge because we’re dealing with humans. There are lots of great programs and progressions out there. And most of us know that outside factors may affect tissue capacity (how much you can throw at your body) before training is no longer productive.

Geoff Girvitz @geoffgirvitz.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
So, does good technique matter? Yeah. It matters a lot. It allows you to spread the load more evenly across tissues. It allows for efficiency. And it provides a more consistent training effect. I.e. you can more reliably evaluate whether you’ve overdone it or underdone it.

Are barbell squats and deadlifts essential and awesome OR dangerous and/or overhyped. Here’s some clarity: Bodies adapt to stresses… within reason. That means that even questionable technique is less problematic than doing too much too soon.

Movement and exercise can be a form of alliance. Of support. * "Do you need to move?" * "Do you want to improve this ability?" * Let's take a movement break. Choose something that isn't too easy and isn't too hard – something that feels just right."

Anything that frames exercise as punishment – as a signal of failure or something inherently unpleasant – you chip away at a kid's natural motivation to move and exercise. You put a barrier up. If you believe in the value of lifelong exercise, this isn't the way.

As a dad 20+ year fitness guy (trainer/coach & studio owner), I never use exercise as punishment: * You're late to class? The punishment is that you've missed some class * Conditioning isn't good enough? If you care about that as an athlete, we can work in some ways that don't totally suck

The origins of this viewpoint (and untethered confidence) are helpful to understand. And while the movement is deeply problematic – and on a more personal level, deeply annoying – what are the kernels of goodness there? What do you see as the admirable aspirations or drives that have been co-opted?
