"Held" by artist Safi Butler
This artwork is a striking monochrome linocut block print that illustrates a fierce yet intimate interaction between a black cat and a human. The piece beautifully captures the dramatic contrast inherent to the medium, depicting the cat with bared teeth, intensely gripping and biting into a human arm.

"Red Rose" by artists Anna and Elena Balbusso.
A striking surrealist illustration blending human anatomy with botany. A stylized woman's face peers out from the blooming center of a vibrant red rose, while a thorny green stem acts as her neck and large leaves stretch across her chest to mirror garments or shoulders. The piece utilizes textured, multi-layered digital and hand-painted application techniques characteristic of the artists.

This woodblock print, designed circa the late 1760s, is a supreme masterpiece of early full-color nishiki-e ("brocade pictures") by the immortal Edo-period pioneer Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770). The Shamisen Player:
Seated intimately together upon a rustic bamboo bench (endai), two slender youths lean into one another in a quiet moment of shared musical rhythm. On the right, the shamisen player—clad in an understated, vertically striped kimono (shima-kimono)—holds the instrument’s long wooden neck, their head resting gently against their companion’s. One bare foot slips casually from a woven straw sandal (zōri) onto the earth below. Resting softly against the player’s shoulder, the companion wears a terracotta-brown garment decorated with scattered folding paper motifs and lined in rich cinnabar silk. Behind them, a winding, gently undulating stream carves through a sandy bank where clusters of Japanese irises (kakitsubata) blossom in muted orange and soft green hues. Signed "Suzuki Harunobu ga" along the right margin, the print’s soft, faded polychrome palette and aged paper ground evoke a delicate sensory atmosphere: the crisp plucking of silk strings mingling with the soft murmur of flowing water and the gentle fragrance of damp, early-summer irises.
Designed circa the late 1760s during the Meiwa era (1764–1772), this work stands as a supreme example of full-color nishiki-e ("brocade pictures"), a revolutionary printing technology pioneered by Suzuki Harunobu (1725–1770). Prior to Harunobu's breakthroughs in 1765—developed through private calendar-exchange clubs (e-koyomi) among Edo's literary elite—woodblock prints were restricted to two or three basic color blocks. Harunobu introduced keyblock alignment marks (kentō), enabling multi-block registration that achieved unprecedented color complexity, delicate skin tones, and rich textile textures. Harunobu is famed for establishing the dreamlike, ethereal aesthetic of Edo youth, capturing figures with slender, floating proportions and an idealized, tender grace. The blooming irises place the scene in late spring or early summer, echoing classical poetic tropes (uta-makura) where water gardens symbolize romantic longing.

Women in a Crow Boat at New Year Sunrise. Ukiyo-e woodblock print. About 1800, Japan. Artist Utagawa Toyokuni I
Surging through churning, frothing waves, a fantastical pleasure boat anchored by a monumental, jet-black crow figurehead carves its path into the early morning light. Atop the horizon, the deep crimson orb of the first sunrise of the New Year (hatsuhinode) rises above low clouds and distant mountain peaks. Standing poised aboard the decorated hull, an elegant woman in a mauve, plum-blossom-patterned kimono holds aloft a shallow porcelain dish containing a potted New Year arrangement, while her companion in a coral-red shibori garment sits attentively at her side. The stark contrast between the crow’s light-absorbing black feathers, the crisp spray of white water, and the soft pastel robes creates a vivid sensory landscape, evoking the biting chill of an early morning sea breeze infused with the faint scent of salt and spring buds.
Designed around 1800 by master woodblock printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825), this polychrome print (nishiki-e) fuses Edo-period bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) with auspicious New Year mythology and mitate (playful poetic allusion). The crow boat (karasu-bune) draws upon sacred Shinto lore—wherein the crow is venerated as a divine sun-messenger and guide—blended with the popular urban custom of gathering to witness the first sunrise (hatsuhinode) for health and good fortune. The potted plant held aloft, traditionally fukujusō (pheasant's eye) or dwarf pine, serves as a harbinger of wealth, resilience, and longevity. The intricate carving of the wave patterns and the flawless registration of delicate pigments reflect the peak of Edo-period monozukuri (artisanal mastery), requiring a seamless synthesis between artist, block-cutter, and printer.

Vintage Japanese Obi design art. Painting 1940’s, Japan. Yorke Antique Textiles
Unfolding across a vertical paper canvas, lush, stylized blossoms featuring pristine white outer petals and intense vermilion-red centers burst forth against a deep forest-green ground. Delicate, textured golden stamens dot the heart of each flower, while slender, arching blades of emerald grass sweep dynamically across the composition. A textured diagonal swath of antiqued gold wash glimmers beneath the foliage, sprinkled with small, luminous white dew drops that sparkle like liquid pearls. The vibrant contrast between velvety green shadows, warm metallic undertones, and saturated reds and whites creates a tactile, sensory atmosphere, evoking the cool freshness of a dew-laden morning garden.
Created in 1940s Japan, this painted paper work is an original zuan (textile design render)—a hand-painted pattern template crafted specifically to guide the production of a luxury silk obi (kimono sash). During the Mid-Shōwa period, skilled textile designers (zuan-shi) synthesized classical Nihonga painting techniques with modern graphic boldings to instruct master weavers and yūzen dyers. The grand peony motif, long celebrated as a symbol of nobility, prosperity, and springtime vigor, is here reimagined with dramatic mid-century clarity. Such design renders embody the essential first stage of Japanese textile monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating fine art draftsmanship into technical instructions for weaving and dyeing raw silk into wearable art.

This painting depicts a drunken man slumped at a table while Death sits patiently beside him. Surrounded by empty bottles, wilted flowers and the remnants of a night's excess, the macabre scene serves as a haunting allegory of indulgence, mortality and the inevitable consequences of vice.

"Carmel Sunset" by artist Jason Sacran. Year: 2025
This oil painting showcases a dramatic, glowing seascape along the rugged California coastline near Carmel-by-the-Sea. Executed with loose, texturized impressionistic brushstrokes, the composition focuses heavily on the interplay of vibrant gold, amber, and orange sunlight hitting the sheer cliff edges and reflecting across the turbulent ocean waves below. The artwork won the "Best Water" category at the December 2025 Plein Air Salon.
