'The one place it's okay to poke a monkey with a stick' is... a credibly funny magazine ad tag-line for Super Monkey Ball Touch & Roll on Nintendo DS, right?

Yoichi Nishimura worked at Busicom (calculators), Commodore (VIC-1001, C64, Max Machine); was apparently invited by Jack Tramiel to join Atari. Nishimura is donating hardware, material to the Microcomputer Museum, the computer museum started by Takeshi Yoshizaki in Ome, Japan. x.com/Dream_Librar...

New blog post time! This week's game is Battle Monsters, a fighting game that sometimes gets mistaken as a "Mortal Kombat clone", but is actually much different and far more interesting. Silly characters, grimy aesthetics, and even a bit of platforming made this a pleasant surprise: #blog #gaming

Battle Monsters
I’m often a sucker for a janky fighting game, but I gotta say, Battle Monsters impressed me! It’s jank, for sure, but there’s a lot more going on under the hood than at first glance. Once you reali…

BMX Heat, an unreleased prototype by Atari, uses some hardware similar to Hard Drivin (or Street Drivin), and would have had a bicycle controller to play! Image from the collection at The Strong.

Reminder that despite all the years, Mame is still not perfectly emulating a lot of things, including "simple" games like that. And they're very aware of the fact, since Balloon Bomber is marked "imperfect". But all the retro emulation boxes disable these warnings so most people don't realize it.

Pit Fighter on NES perfectly replicates the arcade experience somehow, bringing the full digitized actor experience you would expect to Nintendo's home console.

I worked on data decompression code for quite a few SNES games that Software Creations developed, Including PLOK! This allowed us to fit lots more levels and graphics into the game that we would have otherwise been able to do.
