Chloe Kelly thought about giving up football this year. Then she signed for Arsenal.

Second book I've re-read this year. A brilliant, fantastical, dream-like story and a fascinating allegory for trauma, abusive manipulation, and a mind cut totally adrift. A distant descendant of The Tempest I think.

And even if we can't quite call 2025-era Jarvis or the crowd at Glasto "common", the feeling of being screwed over by those with the money and knowledge to do a lot more than just commodifying your misery is as relevant today as ever.

Time for one of my favourite poems.
Letter to the Person Who Carved His Initials into the Oldest Living Longleaf Pine in North America, by Matthew Olzmann:

Tell me what it's like to live without
curiosity, without awe. To sail
on clear water, rolling your eyes
at the kelp reefs swaying
beneath you, ignoring the flicker
of mermaid scales in the mist,
looking at the world and feeling
only boredom. To stand
on the precipice of some wild valley,
the eagles circling, a herd of caribou
booming below, and to yawn
with indifference. To discover
something primordial and holy.
To have the smell of the earth
welcome you to everywhere.
To take it all in, and then,
to reach for your knife.

Labour has a whopping great majority and four years left to turn this country around. They should be setting the agenda, not chasing about trying to placate voters of a party with five MPs who will never vote for them anyway. It's not only disappointing... it's embarrassing

MACBETH Act 1 Sc 1 l.3: SECOND WITCH When the hurly-burly’s done, When the battle’s lost and won. The truly significant event of this day will come *after* the noise and chaos of battle has finished. The juxtaposition of "lost" and "won" is important here too. 1/

Re LLMs writing term papers: the other day I saw someone say that using LLMs to write is like bringing a forklift to the gym. It's not that the weights need to go up; it's that you need to do the lifting. The doing of the work is the result, not the paper being done or the weights having moved.

Let's read Macbeth. Act 1 Sc 1 l.1: FIRST WITCH When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain? The first lines of the play focus us immediately on the motif of TIME. The witches begin by looking to the future: immediately predicting and prophesying. 1/

Clothes shopping. I wonder if anyone else here in the 35-45 bracket understands the dilemma of a) not wanting to dress like I think I'm still in uni and b) not wanting to buy things my dad would wear. It's a tough balancing act.

Man, this is a pretty fucking gross move from Amazon, huh? Good on @bookshop.org for not mincing words, though:
Every April, we celebrate Independent Bookstore Day to remind us how vital indie bookstores are to our communities and society. It’s a day of joy and solidarity, and significant financial impact for these bookstores.

This year, Amazon is undercutting that with a “Book Sale” on the same day—a calculated move by a company that has already put half the bookstores in the country out of business, controls over 60% of the market and sells far more books than all indie bookstores combined. The people at Amazon responsible for the timing of their "Book Sale" should be ashamed, but they are shameless.

A really interesting decision in the show to have the murder be the "elephant in the room" in ep3 rather than the obvious route of having him talk through why/how he did it. But this misreading is likely a consequence of that.

Etymology nerd: a little boy in church this morning confused the word "monstrance" with "monstrosity", which is funny! But in fact words such as monstrance and demonstrate do in fact come from the same Latin root as "monster".

Adolescence wasn't quite what I was expecting. For the drama "about the manosphere" it actually only touches on that stuff quite lightly. 99% of writers would have had ep3 be explicitly about Jamie's incipient misogyny, so an interesting (good) choice to let it lurk in the background.

In short I think we're confusing resource creation for planning. As in resources are plans, which is a misconception made worse by heavily centralised curriculum. And AI is making it worse. And ITT/ECT is quite weak on it compared to other areas.
