The headline here should say: "Number of private schools increases by 35 - showing fears of an exodus to be unfounded". (The increase is mentioned way down the article.) www.thetimes.com/article/19ef...

Google's "deep mind" is too deep to have a working search function or AI that doesn't just make stuff up.

I'm sure you've covered this in the paywalled section but my idea would be incentivised milestones. A year's paid sabbatical after 10 years so long as you commit to a further 5, that kind of thing.

Chloe Kelly thought about giving up football this year. Then she signed for Arsenal.

Surely that's a full-blown "interpolation" in today's terms. Interestingly in this interview they say it's a Rolling Stones riff -- the chord move is the same as e.g. Start Me Up. www.theguardian.com/culture/2019...

Second book I've re-read this year. A brilliant, fantastical, dream-like story and a fascinating allegory for trauma, abusive manipulation, and a mind cut totally adrift. A distant descendant of The Tempest I think.

America - Simon and Garfunkel Any number of Dylan songs but maybe Isis or Tangled Up In Blue Taylor Swift at her best does this -- All Too Well as an example Nick Cave -- Red Right Hand I know you don't quite mean the same as songs with a narrative but a lot of mine are quite narrative.

I'd be interested to know what approach you advocate for managing/shepherding/monitoring the difficulty level of volitional reading. Or does one just not try. The relationship of "challenge" and "pleasure" seems like a very thorny issue to me.

My lukewarm take is that the most influential bit in the Matrix isn't the red and blue pills, it's the bit where Morpheus downloads kung fu into Neo'd brain. The mirage of acquiring knowledge and skills with zero effort is central to online culture, for better or (often) worse.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago and honestly I wasn't ready. So much to process afterwards about nostalgia, ageing, youth and adulthood. One of the top 4 or 5 British bands of the last 40 years.

And even if we can't quite call 2025-era Jarvis or the crowd at Glasto "common", the feeling of being screwed over by those with the money and knowledge to do a lot more than just commodifying your misery is as relevant today as ever.

The line that got me this evening was "What's the point in being rich / If you can't think what to do with it / 'Coz you're so bleeding thick?" Just...sadly very relevant to so many people in charge right now.

Having seen them a couple of weeks ago -- it was brillliant and quite emotional -- I'm obsessed now with how their music has obviously stayed relevant and is still LOVED by their fans. So many young people in the crowd too and parents with their teens.

Time for one of my favourite poems.
Letter to the Person Who Carved His Initials into the Oldest Living Longleaf Pine in North America, by Matthew Olzmann:

Tell me what it's like to live without
curiosity, without awe. To sail
on clear water, rolling your eyes
at the kelp reefs swaying
beneath you, ignoring the flicker
of mermaid scales in the mist,
looking at the world and feeling
only boredom. To stand
on the precipice of some wild valley,
the eagles circling, a herd of caribou
booming below, and to yawn
with indifference. To discover
something primordial and holy.
To have the smell of the earth
welcome you to everywhere.
To take it all in, and then,
to reach for your knife.

Are we sure it's not ironic in the song? Since the next line is "then work came and made us free." Or is the idea that libraries really DID give us power, but work didn't make us free. Help.
