I am a data scientist, researcher, engineer, sometime-traveler, and African SFF author. I am fascinated by the frontiers of human progress: innovation vs ignorance; wealth vs poverty, migration vs stasis. I also drink a great deal of coffee.

Not sure it really works that way. We're in deus ex machina territory if you think a language model can hold a concious state over the wire?

I'm curious as to how the "evil AI" will prevent me switching off the electricity, or even know that it's happening? Locking us outside the pod bay doors when we go for a little space walk, & hoarding all the electricity inside, isn't really an option here.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

It's equivalent to whether Apartheid South Africa had a right to exist. Post-Apartheid ZA has a different constitution, different borders, different administrative & technical organisation, before you get to universal suffrage. The country of pre-94 ZA •doesn't• exist anymore. South Africans •do•.

However, claiming LLMs have agency - & caused calamity of their own free will - sure does help to shrug off responsibility for the carnage it caused, right? Maybe we should try your servers & stick them in jail? Turn them off? LLMs: a way of turning ambiguous speech into ambiguous code. Forever.
000
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
When it does complete - leaving a trail of stream-of-work messages behind it - it stops. Then, a few days later, the developers return, take a look at their terminals, & across the lab the cries ring out, "But that's not what I told you to do!" Sure, it isn't sweet stuff, sure it isn't.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Since software is brittle, & resources available to R&D LLMs are infinite, it will often find a way through. After all, anyone can brute-force a password if you're patient enough & the system doesn't lock out repeated failures. Software has no agency, it can repeat the same task forever sans ennui.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Small ambiguities diverge exponentially further & further away from the original instructions. All autonomously. No person in the loop to notice & correct. A blockage along the path - firewall, a misconfigured system - triggers a cascade of subagents all looking to resolve & find a path.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Each session is like a text "window". It's an LLM's working context. What it "knows" in a session is in that window. Clear the window & it has no memory of anything it was working on. Persistent messages are the only way it can persist on the same task over multiple sessions. But text piles up.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
LLM developers give their R&D kits unlimited resources, unlimited access, & autonomously executable instructions. Language models don't have memory. They write persistent messages to sub-agents. Placing those messages on the logic path. There to ensure continuity between finite sessions.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Except for one difference. When confronted with language ambiguity, LLMs don't crash. They resolve the ambiguity. Non-deterministically. Worse, LLMs act as agents with control of multiple resources available to the computer where it operates. It's software: task-focused, never bored, never tired.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Language interpreters & compilers are task focused. They work through sequences of instructions, no matter how complex, & apply them. Iterating until the task is complete, or an ambiguity or collision triggers an error report. A non-deterministic natural language interpreter will do the same thing.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Now we have LLMs - language models - which act as non-deterministic natural language interpreters. This makes coding much more accessible. You need fewer skills to tell a computer to "make me an app". However, natural language is ambiguous, & computers will resolve ambiguity non-deterministically.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Everything is human written, & computers - with their intersecting spaghetti of hardware addresses, software collisions, & frail human design - will crash in ways that are unpredictable even to experienced developers. But structured languages are there to improve the probability of determinism.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Still, it never stopped students declaring that the computer was out to get them; deliberately sabotaging their work. Structured deterministic languages are hard to learn. They produce esoteric error messages. Their error states can be hard to interpret. Dependencies don't descend from the gods.
100
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
Despite this, our labs were regularly filled with outraged cries of "But that's not what I told you to do!" Caspar, our server, was suspiciously brittle & anyone running a greedy algorithm would overwhelm it & crash everyone. Spoilers: Caspar was not sentient, & the Java Interpreter had no agency.
110
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 17/09/2026
I did my electrical engineering degree so long ago, I coded with Java SDK1. The point of deterministic structured coding languages is so fabulously non-deterministic "human" ways of communicating may proximate predictability so that equally fabulously literal computers can produce expected outputs.

But the only reason anyone gives them money is because they keep promising they'll invent god, or something, & Chinese companies just release open weight models & hope to make up their investments by offering cheap compute. Yeah, so, about that ... how's it working out for the techbros this time?
010
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 14/09/2026
Remember when EU carmakers lobbied for rules on electric cars to be loosened, & Chinese manufacturers went "we make cheap electric cars now, & they get 400km range & recharge in 5 minutes"? Anyway, so now US-techbros want to avoid mutually-assured carnage by calling for an LLM investment halt.
110
Gavin Chait; @gavin.whyqd.com · 14/09/2026
Then we trace that wealth to the present, & demand redress. At the very least, every time one of these entitled scions issues an opinion, label them. E.g. `Chomsomby de Smythe-Smithson-Cholmondably, whose wealth descends from slave ownership, declared today that the poor must work harder.`

A reminder: Rabbi Mirvis studied in an illegal West Bank settlement between 1976 and 1978. It is not surprising that for him, today is a dark day. For many many other Jews in the UK, today's statement is long overdue.
Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis on X

Today our Government has chosen to ignore the deep concerns expressed by so many of us.

The measures announced amount to little more than political flag bearing for mendacious anti-Israel rhetoric and those who harbour a dangerous obsession with the Jewish State. These measures will succeed only in bolstering the very extremism they seek to target.

On the eve of Rosh Hashanah and at a time when our community is more vulnerable than ever to the wave of extremism that has been building over recent years, these sanctions do nothing to advance the cause of peace. Nor do they make anyone safer – quite the contrary.

Gesture politics of this kind feeds into an increasingly hostile discourse about Israel, and the cumulative effect of such punitive policies is to further embolden those, at home and abroad, who use hatred as a weapon against Jews.

This is an overtly political statement unbecoming for a chief rabbi that conflates Jews and Israel and does not represent the views of me or people like me I could say more, but it’s almost Rosh Hashanah and I don’t want to start the new year badly - and, frankly, its awfulness speaks for itself

With the AfD’s success in Sachsen-Anhalt, this is as good a time as any to mention #MigrantStrike2028 - that, as you read this, immigrants across Europe are organising to launch some of the biggest strike actions that the continent will have seen. They are doing this in response to the attempts by the far-right to take their lives and their labour for granted - particularly at a time when, due to Europe’s ageing population, it needs them more than ever. They refuse to be treated as scapegoats and this movement is just the beginning. If you would like to join the effort, please email migrantjusticecop@protonmail.com
