This is an insane statement. They *were* foreign nationals leaving a coach! The mob was not actually wrong! The councillor is implying that the issue is they got the wrong kind of foreign national. If it has been a bus full of tourists? Would have have been fair game? What about intl students?

He [Tolkein] commented this in 1972, fifteen months before his death:
"I have written nothing beyond the first few years of the Fourth Age. (Except the beginning of a tale supposed to refer to the end of the reign of Eldaron about 100 years after the death of Aragorn.
Then I of course discovered that the King's Peace would contain no tales worth recounting; and his wars would have little interest after the overthrow of Sauron; but that almost certainly a restlessness would appear about then, owing to the (it seems) inevitable boredom of Men with the good: there would be secret societies practising dark cults, and 'orc-cults' among adolescents.) "
- Letter 338, (dated 6 June 1972)

In May a pair of charity hikers were met with jeers from a queue at the summit as they tapped the trig point to complete a charity challenge.
Jamie Richardson, 32, and Richard Thiedeman,
34, from Lincolnshire, were climbing Yr Wyddfa as part of the Three Peaks challenge to raise money for their friend who has motor neurone disease (MND).
"I was getting booed and then there was a gentleman who was at the top, who had just had his photo taken and he physically tried to stop me," Richardson said.
He said he had just touched the summit point and heard someone say "you should be ashamed of yourself".
Richardson added: "There's no policing of it at all, it is purely free will, if you want to queue you can.
"The queuing, that is just purely down to British culture traditions."

This is fantastic, by @suscrockford.bsky.social I was - personally - particularly interested in the analysis of how society views scientists, vs how scientists view themselves, and how those conceptions interact with the sources of science’s legitimacy

Oh, so the over-leveraging of our higher ed sector on intl students is also to blame for the inflation of entry tariffs & all the undue pressure on 6th Formers? You mean it wasn’t just “grade inflation”?? It wasn’t just unis compensating for schools “dumbing down”??? Wha…?! Colour me shocked.

missing edward saïd today “Londoners mould homes from clay in desperate effort to escape life in wooden shacks”
A screenshot from the Financial Times showing an article from 2 July 2026, titled: “Gazans mould homes from clay in desperate effort to escape life in tents”.
First three paragraphs of the article, reading:

After two years of living in tents, Jaatar Atallah, a Palestinian potter in Gaza, decided to build a home from the earth. It was to be like the bread ovens his family had been making for generations, but big enough for his parents to live in.

He gathered clay from an area a few kilometres from his tent and - with
the help of about 15 people, including his father, also a potter - he set about making mud bricks.

For months, they learnt as they built. Finally, they completed a domed hut, "so solid you could stand on top of it", said Atallah …

Just looking at Reform’s “mass deportation” [sic] policy. Having central integrated government database is a key aspect of it Brits have historically been (correctly!) very suspicious of such things as an infringement on civil liberties Also: Reform was against Labour’s latest govt ID policy!

absolutely nothing about the reality of what happened in the latest summary. Just a false claim that the news conferences communicated "details" (is that what they're calling "lies" now?)

The Masque of Anarchy (abridged)
Percy Bysshe Shelley

Last came Anarchy: he rode
On a white horse, splashed with blood;
He was pale even to the lips,
Like Death in the Apocalypse.

And he wore a kingly crown;
And in his grasp a sceptre shone;
On his brow this mark I saw –
‘I AM GOD, AND KING, AND LAW!’

And a mighty troop around,
With their trampling shook the ground,
Waving each a bloody sword,
For the service of their Lord.

And each dweller, panic-stricken,
Felt his heart with terror sicken
Hearing the tempestuous cry
Of the triumph of Anarchy.

For with pomp to meet him came,
Clothed in arms like blood and flame,
The hired murderers, who did sing
‘Thou art God, and Law, and King.

‘We have waited, weak and lone
For thy coming, Mighty One!
Our purses are empty, our swords are cold,
Give us glory, and blood, and gold.’

So he sent his slaves before
To seize upon the Bank and Tower,
And was proceeding with intent
To meet his pensioned ParliamentWhen one fled past, a maniac maid,
And her name was Hope, she said:
But she looked more like Despair,
And she cried out in the air:

‘My father Time is weak and gray
With waiting for a better day;
See how idiot-like he stands,
Fumbling with his palsied hands!

Then she lay down in the street,
Right before the horses’ feet,
Expecting, with a patient eye,
Murder, Fraud, and Anarchy.

When between her and her foes
A mist, a light, an image rose,
Small at first, and weak and frail
Like the vapour of a vale:

And the prostrate multitude
Looked – and ankle-deep in blood,
Hope, that maiden most serene,
Was walking with a quiet mien:

A rushing light of clouds and splendour,
A sense awakening and yet tender
Was heard and felt – and at its close
These words of joy and fear arose

‘Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number,
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you –
Ye are many – they are few.’

current mood (Lord Byron, Darkness)
And War, which for a moment was no more,
Did glut himself again:— a meal was bought
With blood, and each sat sullenly apart
Gorging himself in gloom: no love was left;
All earth was but one thought — and that was death

(excerpt from Darkness, by Lord Byron)

The person who actually fucked up is whoever made this decision in 2013 to not use the Govt platform and to instead use… WordPress, for completely bogus “autonomy” reasons (how autonomous are you anyway if you’re using HMT mail servers?). Seems like a leadership decision not a technical decision.

Bit of a change of tune from Lammy re jury trials. I recall @barristersecret.bsky.social saying in their book that you should always choose a jury trial if possible, because the chances of injustice are much higher in the magistrates’ court.
A Tweet from David Lammy dated 20 June 2020, which says:

Jury trials are a fundamental part of our democratic settlement. Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea.

The Government need to pull their finger out and acquire empty public buildings across the country to make sure these can happen in a way that is safe.

Have I achieved peak late 00s desktop perfection? Quite possibly. Not quite #retrocomputing, but still hits the nostalgia AND fairly good to get work done on, not least bc you can't idly surf the Internet (Intel Core i7 950, ATI Radeon HD 5850, triple booting Win XP 32 bit Win 7 64 bit, & OpenBSD.)

Here is a proper overlay of the Euro, UK, and US datasets — the US has clearly also had a slowdown. The difference is that in crises (2008 & Covid) UK/Euro productivity decreases whilst US productivity increases. Not sure what's driving that difference
