Leishmaniases are clinically distinct parasitic diseases transmitted by infected sand flies. Laboratory diagnosis has shifted to molecular methods. Treatment choices are limited; two vaccines are being tested. Read the Review Article: nej.md/4nPCWn6
Chart detailing different types of leishmaniasis infection. It shows the progression from asymptomatic to cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. The cutaneous section includes localized, diffuse, disseminated, and leishmaniasis recidivans. The visceral section includes classic VL and viscerotropic VL. Species such as L. mexicana, L. amazonensis, and L. donovani are listed. The chart is organized with boxes and lines indicating associations among the types and species.

The @ukhsa.bsky.social STI Reference Lab has identified a strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae which evades detection on the Cepheid Xpert CT/GC Assay. Read more in our eurosurveillance article www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2...

Detection and characterisation of Xpert CT/NG assay Neisseria gonorrhoeae diagnostic escape mutants, England, June 2025
We report the timely detection of a strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae which was confirmed as a diagnostic escape mutant on the Cepheid Xpert CT/NG assay in England in June 2025. The reason for assay failure was a likely recombination event with Neisseria meningitidis, which removed both assay target sites. Seven historical putative Xpert CT/NG assay diagnostic escape mutants were also identified following subsequent in silico screening of gonococcal genome collections, but currently there is no evidence of widespread circulation.

You may have seen reports of our investigation into a #listeria outbreak linked to desserts supplied to some hospitals and care homes. Article: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Read our response from Dr Gauri Godbole, Deputy Director for Gastrointestinal Infections, Food Safety and One Health.
Dr Gauri Godbole, Deputy Director for Gastrointestinal Infections, Food Safety and One Health at UKHSA, said:
“We are investigating a small number of cases of listeria. The cause of the outbreak isn’t confirmed yet. However, our laboratory testing has identified a potential link to a particular type of dessert, which is not available from retailers but is served in some NHS Trusts. Working with the Food Standards Agency, on a precautionary basis, we have advised NHS Trusts and those providing care to vulnerable people to stop serving these desserts while investigations are underway.
