"But the handicapped need cars!" No, what they need are options in mobility. The tech exists to enable their freedom of independent mobility, but almost always what is lacking is the enabling infrastructure. Bike lanes and quality sidewalks serve everyone.

Fine, if people on bikes are expected to follow the same rules as cars, then I guess we're gonna have to start acting like motorists.

It’s remarkable how many people can move on a street when those people don’t feel the need to always take a massive car with them. Mobility in cities is about space.
Busy European street with buses filled with people in a long line of people on bikes, waiting for the light to change in a separated, protected bike lane. Imagine if all those people or each in a separate car.

Gerard Douplein, Amsterdam in 1987 and today
Split-image comparison of Gerard Douplein in Amsterdam, showing the same street in the 1980s and today. The historic black-and-white photo is dominated by parked cars and moving traffic, while the modern colour photo shows the street transformed into a lively public space filled with bicycles, cyclists, pedestrians, trees, cafés and outdoor seating.

I don't give a damn if the media is calling a landslide. Get your ass to the polls anyway! Complacency is how we lose. Drop the comfort, lock in, and vote like democracy depends on it—because it does!

My son’s driver’s ed kept reiterating, no screens while driving. No phones. Don’t be distracted. We have a loaner car that has a giant iPad on the dashboard and you have to operate it as a touchscreen while the car is moving at least sometimes. We decided this was a good idea?

People constantly claim that having a child makes biking impossible. The reality is that the only thing restricting your mobility is hostile city infrastructure. Streets have the power to either give you safe transportation options or force you into a car for every single errand.

People roll their eyes when we complain about bike lanes protected by just paint or plastic sticks, but paint doesn't stop multi-ton vehicles. Look at the force required to move these concrete barriers. This is exactly why solid physical protection is the only acceptable standard.

When cities force people on bikes onto infrastructure built exclusively for cars, conflicts are inevitable. People on bikes don’t break rules to spite motorists, they sometimes bend them because self-preservation always overrides traffic laws designed for vehicles they aren't driving.

I won't claim that riding a bike fixes everything, but moving your body, getting some fresh air, and being face to face with nature on a simple commute can do so much for your physical and mental health. You don't always have to leave the car at home, but give it a try sometime if you can.

This is demonstrably, measurably improving the health of the people who live there. Most notably, it increases the respiratory *& cognitive* health of children. They literally do better in school. If this country really gave a shit about children, this would be at the top of the public-policy list.

The cognitive dissonance of car culture is exhausting. People foam at the mouth when you propose funding walkability, bikes, and high quality public transit. They aggressively fight against the exact non-car mobility options that would actually solve the traffic they endlessly complain about.

Note to young people recently learning about U.S. politics: It was never like it is now! In the past, especially around the time of the Civil War, there may have been a few fistfights and some as-sasi-nation plots; but it never came down to the current level of pettiness against opposition.

So true. It's a great way to realize that we ARE in community, and that our actions affect the lives and well-being of others. Biking for transportation makes it possible to see and connect with our fellow humans in a basic, organic way that driving a car inherently interrupts and corrupts.
