Just used @flippercloud.io to enable customers of @fireside.fm to opt-in to a preview of an overhauled Fireside UI after months of heads down work. And if they aren't ready for it just yet, they can opt right back out and use the old UI while we iterate and improve based on customer feedback.

Pretty obvious-in-hindsight hack, but after working on some larger initiatives that couldn't just be easily shipped daily, the morale boost of working on things that _can_ be shipped daily is priceless. Finding ways to break things down in a way that they're shipped daily can work wonders.

Spent about ~30 minutes on an annoyingly squeaky/creaky foot. Re-did some screws with fresh Loctite. Added some teflon lubricant on the plastic bits. WD-40’d a couple of spots. Swapped out my sleeve for a new one. Every step feels ~30% better now. If only it was that easy for real body parts.

Instead of React as the new Flash, the pace of CSS improvements is making a case that JavaScript in general might be the new Flash. It doesn't seem wild to imagine that ten years from now, sites could still provide most of the same functionality while barely needing JavaScript at all.

Really good shoehorns are underrated, but they need to be hefty metal ones that don't bend and are at least a foot long. Having several and keeping them stashed throughout the house is one of those small changes that makes a big difference.

TIL: `rails credentials:diff --enroll` (and `--disenroll`) Makes local diffs of encrypted credentials files display as diffs of the un-encrypted text instead of diffs of the encrypted gibberish. Helps reduce friction of seeing what changed in credentials when merging or navigating merge conflicts.

Getting closer to a useful "temporary" vs. "permanent" dichotomy for @flippercloud.io flags to help make flag cleanup and organization more relevant. That way, we can proactively recommend cleaning up temporary flags without recommending cleaning up permanent flags.

Radio button options for feature flags. The first is "Temporary flags should be removed when the work is complete." The second is "Permanent flags are long-lived for maintenance or infrastructure."

So much for stuffing ourselves silly on Thanksgiving. Doesn’t look like great food—or eating at all—will be a priority on opening day this year.
