I got so many smart questions from @garrettbucks.bsky.social about my journey as an accidental organizer. It turns out you CAN fight city hall—or, in my case, the school board.

This is maybe the best thing I've read about all the AIpocalypse hype, mainly because it's not really about AI, it's about us. Let's talk more about us. "the only logical responses is to revel in the absolute best parts of our humanity, loudly and collectively"

It’s such a perfect time capsule of this cultural-political moment, both in that it has inspired far more discourse than earnest engagement, and because it lies directly to your face, repeatedly and unconvincingly, for no apparent reason. thewhitepages.net/p/send-help-...

This would be petty to make a point of if this was just a random screen shot, but they're sitting like this in all of their talking head interviews (again for their weird vanity documentary that is theoretically about celebrating America but sure does contain a lot of them).

Love not looking at my wife in our vanity documentary while she stares at me as if I just came home from war.

A really cool thing right now is that you can just lie to people and be like "it was a social experiment" and then you're like, "what did that experiment prove, that you can lie?" and they're like "really made you think, didn't it?"

Begging national pundits to stop making broad pronouncements on local elections from a few viral clips (Hong's campaign was, in practice, more focused on joy and community than any I'd ever experienced). This is from @amandamarcotte.bsky.social but I'm seeing it in lots of places.

Sort of related to this, here's what it felt like to be a Hong supporter in Wisconsin. 11 months: "WHAT A BLAST! We never expected Hong to do this well." 1 week: I mean, sure, those interviews could've been better but WAIT, IS THIS REALLY WHAT'S FRYING EVERYBODY'S BRAINS?

I know this is basic, but midterm primary calendar feels like a big part of the issue here. One narrative-driving race a week, just enough time for take-makers (of all ideologies and agendas) to strip all the local nuance out of a campaign to fit the point they were already waiting to make.

There will be plenty of takes today about what Wisconsin's gubernatorial primary means for broader rhetorical proxy wars. This isn't one of them. It's about what a dad and a son talk about while driving home from a night where their hopes both swelled and crashed. thewhitepages.net/p/what-do-yo...

AES on gender is a fascinating "two things true at once" situation. He's done a legit great job (at multiple points) of reframing the masculinity convo AND it's still worth asking whether people are more willing to hear it now bc its delivered by a dude in a tight shirt who lifts (unlike in '18).

Since the pandemic, there’s been a decline in third spaces — places where people can connect & feel a sense of belonging. Now, some DC residents are creating ones to fill that gap. I spoke to the organizers behind these newest community hubs for @51st.news ⬇️ 51st.news/dc-third-spa...

I hope all my neighbors vote for the candidate who excites them the most, and then I hope we organize for a legislative trifecta. I really believe that we're up to the task. I also hope that nobody outside our state will be weird online, but I have zero percent confidence that'll be the case.
150 5
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Also: anybody who tells you they know how the general will play out, with any candidate, is giving themselves away as a pundit rather than an organizer. We're a weird state! It's gonna take a lot of work to win! We have three billionaires who basically lay eggs of money for the GOP.

Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
There's a super interesting story about how and why Fran energized folks here over the past few months. If you've been organizing here, you'd know it already. If you're new, that's fine, but start with curiosity rather than just plopping your Grand Theory of Politics down and calling it a day.
140 4
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
This, I worry, is going to be especially true re: analyses of those of us who vote Fran. People who just started paying attention to the race this week will either claim we are dead ender idiots for supporting a "weak" candidates or proof of a new vanguard. Maybe have some curiosity instead!
230 3
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
What gets exhausting, though, is having our state constantly tokenized by the punditry industrial complex (on all sides). If you don't actually organize, but just love being smart and right online, shut up! My neighbors don't exist to prove your pet theory of politics!
140 4
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Next week my neighbors are going to vote for all sorts of reasons, some of which are connected to national politics or broader ideologies, some of which aren't. The best organizers (here and everywhere) know that already and operate accordingly (not just cycle to cycle).
120 2
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I'm a leftist. Dues paying DSA member. But I chose to support Fran not just because she's a socialist (there have been socialist candidates here I haven't supported), but bc of the way she organized in rural Wisconsin years before running. Likewise, I respect how Crowley has run our County.
130 3
Garrett Bucks @garrettbucks.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
It's even true for many who do think about politics too much. Re: our Governor's race, I'm a v. strong Francesca Hong supporter, but would still be mostly happy if David Crowley won. That's actually a common take here, but that's not how national discourse has already metabolized this race.

Already pre-exhuasted by the amount of electoral takes that my state (WI) is going to weather next week, and have to say: it's so weird how people who think about politics all the time talk about voters. Most voters don't see themselves in a weird life-or-death battle between centrism and leftism!
