which the game reflects. The low maintenance overhead for throwing together a Gripen-based airforce frees you up to focus your complexity elsewhere.

don't mind me. just over here chewing through the enemy's expensive air cover with cheap Swedish multi-role fighters, then letting them loose on their armour as well.

Sure. When the Roman army needs over a tonne of cheese to make it through the day people nod sagely and say of course they needed those calories. But when I need over a tonne of cheese to make it through the day people beg me to stop and talk about my cholesterol and mental health.

the value of northern England to the Romans was that it was incredibly good sheep farming territory. Which they agressively encouraged. metals from the south, sheep's cheese from the north.

yup. as i talk about in the pod, this is the reason they push the whole of western europe to hard cheese production. because good luck dividing a stilton up, evenly, then carrying it on the march.

John Bull @garius.eurosky.social · 17h
not least because it was likely any auxiliaries attached would have been given a cheese ration, too. and there were more of them than legionairies. Also the Roman Navy stationed in Britain. Reality is, the Roman army would be buying EVERY hard cheese it could source, locally.
060 6
John Bull @garius.eurosky.social · 17h
3 legions at peak, but often understrength. Plus from the Vindolanda letters we know that rations for 'static' (i.e. non-marching) Legions would sometimes vary from baseline in quantity or composition. Because of the need to allow for local goods availability. So my figure is a conservative one.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a little dog is sleeping on a couch, kicking its paws. A person says, “look! The little kicks!” Panel 2: in awe of the cuteness, the person continues, “what do you think he’s dreaming about?” Panel 3: in the dog’s dream, the pup is wearing a captain’s jacket, holding tightly to a wooden ship on stormy seas. In his other paw, he is gripping a harpoon as an enormous vacuum cleaner breaches violently from the water.

I finally had enough down time to photograph “ghost forest”, my big sculpture from my October firing. The results were just spectacular!
A large roundish clay beast, about 18” long, shot against a grey backdrop. There’s tree stumps on the back. Front view of the same beast. It has a smooth head, with no features other than a downturned mouth with porcelain teeth. Back side of the beast. It’s red/brown/black. All the color is from melted wood ash from the firing. There’s many subtle shades and textures.
