Even though it’s 100°F in San Diego, CA, we still need to start our fall crops. The days are shorter despite the heat, bust out the shade cloth and get growing 🌱

Welcoming families at Back To School Night: Get Messy, Build Community 🌱
School garden ready to welcome families at Back to School Night. A blue arch with a pumpkin vining around it stands in the center and colorful picnic tables shaded with a rainbow of umbrellas offer respite from the sunny, day. The long shot is of a freshly mulched corridor lined with garden beds, a propagation station, composting bins, shaded reflect and restore space, to and a shaded outdoor classroom.

It's a great day to plant a garden. 🌱Reminder, soap and water kills this parasite, lettuces, greens and herbs can be soaked with a few drops of Dr. Bronner's organic dish soap (Trader Joes), cold water. Soak again with clean water, rinse and spin. Bake raspberries, or forego.

Spring in San Diego, we can grow pretty much anything right now but the broccoli and squash are particularly happy 🌱
A right cluster of broccoli florets nestles in the center of its plant, a symmetry of green aside from a yellowing leafAnother tight cluster of broccoli florets, verdantly green backed by a starburst of leavesA shriveling yellow squash blossom reaches through black plastic mesh fencing that retains a bulbous, developing green and yellow speckled squashTiny, yellow-orange pumpkins seem to tumble under their protective elephant ear leaves in a bold green with the occasional shock of a yellow blooming flower

Spent the sunny, breezy afternoon potting up seedlings, almost made it to the end. Good to have a reason to get back out there tomorrow 🌱
A patio table partially shaded by an umbrella is covered with seedlings in 4 inch pots, a small aluminum tray of seedlings still in their starter trays. And the backdrop is a flowering raised bed garden, assorted succulents, and an orange tree

Beginning the hardening off of our freshly potted up seedlings! These little friends will grow into our early spring crops as well as longer growing melons and pumpkins that will shade the ground and suppress weeds in our 3 sisters gardens. Can’t wait to have students back in the garden this week 🌱
