The older I get, the more people there are to remember. 🌿 Every year I plant rosemary—the herb for remembrance. Somewhere along the way, I realized I was remembering more people per plant. That thought became today's episode of The Daily Gardener: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/j...

On this day in 2001, the Detroit Free Press shared the story of Harris Olson, known in Michigan as Mr. Daylily. For 45 years, he was head gardener at his church. He hybridized daylilies & peonies. He drove an old gray truck w/ a license plate that read: MR DAYLILY. 1/2

January is named for Janus, the Roman god of thresholds. He looks backward & forward at once. It’s fitting that January’s birth flower is the snowdrop. It blooms while winter still holds firm. Not with abundance, but courage. The gardening year doesn’t begin with fullness. It begins with faith.

🧵 Here's a #November #botanical #poem for today by one of my syrupy, sweet #Victorian favorites - #HelenHuntJackson. (btw I just colorized the photo of Helen, & I love that the background is #chartreuse because it goes so nicely w/ the #ferns. Also, doesn't she look so no-nonsense!?!) #Sassy 1/
So I'm now convinced HHJ was reincarnated as my old piano teacher, Mrs. Bisbee. So similar.
HHJ was a proper victorian woman with little curls of blonde hair about her face. She has heavy-lidded smart eyes, a wide mouth and looks like she would be a friend to many.
Church potluck? There she is with a pan of bars.
School play? She made the costumes for the barn animals.
Bookclub? Yes, of course, she read it. 🤗Ferns at birth - slipping their brown furry coverings and getting ready to unfurl.

After sitting at my feet while I researched James Logan all morning, #Max wanted you to know he was left home during errands today for no good reason. He was so stressed that he had to get Puff, his giant dragon fluffy, and then start yawning on the couch when I got home. #BigFeelings #BlackLab
A big black labrador sits on a couch that has a black blanket on it to disguise his shedding. He is sitting beside his super large dragon, floof named Puff.
Puff comes out when Max feels very put upon or when a larger injustice has occurred.
Max is looking with his old soul eyes. How old is he? I don’t know for sure but I suspect he is 6 to 7. He now sports a distinguished salt and pepper goatee. Here is an excellent profile of Max with classic labrador ears that angle forward.
His brown eyes scream November.
He is still wearing his orange and brown plaid collar and bowtie with a rose gold tag shaped like a bone that simply says Max.

Also, he could do with a treat right now.

Alice Cary's #poem #November is a a love letter to #Autumn #gardeners, whispering the most essential #truth of cultivation: life persists, even when it seems dormant. When your #garden looks bare and lifeless, its heart is simply gathering strength, dreaming of spring's vibrant return! 🌱✨
NOVEMBER
The leaves are fading and falling,
The winds are rough and wild,
The birds have censed their calling,
But let me tell you, my child,

Though day by day, as it closes,
Doth darker and colder grow,
The roots of the bright red roses
Will keep alive in the snow.
And when the winter is over
The boughs will get new leaves,
The quail come back to the clover,
And the swallow back to the enves.

The robin will wear on his bosom
A vest that is bright and new,
And the loveliest wayside blossom
Will shine with the sun and dew.

So, when some dear joy loses
Its beauteous summer glow,
Think how the roots of the roses
Are kept alive in the snow.Alice Cary looks a little like Princess Leia, and she is in modest dress for her time.Quail in the cloverRed, red, roses - in blossom and bud in the summer.

The Region #November It is hard to hear the #north #wind again, And to watch the #treetops, as they #sway. They sway, deeply and loudly, in an effort, So much less than feeling, so much less than speech, Saying and saying, the way things say On the level of that which is not yet #knowledge: 🧵 1/

Between now & Tuesday, garden temps will stay in the 50s. It's going to sprinkle or rain; November is living up to the Season of Mists mantle. Then, 40s and snow in MN. My must-do list includes organizing the pots, draining hoses, spigot prep, burying a succulent wreath, restacking firewood.

This is the time of night when Max curls up on the couch in the library, looks over to see if I'll be awhile, and then takes a before-bedtime nap. In the time it took to write this, he's already found his way to dreamland. 🧵 1/
Max looks at me in his November collar and bow to see if I will be working on the computer for a while. He's got a comfy spot on the old leather couch and has managed to sit his bottom on a stack of pillows. Now, he will take a pre-bedtime nap. Over the next 30 minutes, he will slowly stretch out and gradually knock all the pillows off the sofa. In the morning, Dad will put them all back on. And then it will all repeat again tomorrow evening.
