it's early yet but I'm really impressed by Professor Moss Roberts's translation of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. between the approachable, flowing prose and the incredibly thorough annotations, it might be the edition I come to recommend to curious newcomers.

after giving her two books' worth of a shot (Brother, The Devil Crept In) I've concluded I'm not into Ania Ahlborn. insensitive, exploitive fiction that is, moreover, a pretty dull read. it's like revisiting mid-80s Stephen King, but only the parts you forgot because they're boring or offensive.

since my hospitalization, as a kind of joke just for myself, I've been playing a lot of games with "blood" in the title (blood omen: legacy of kain, blood of bahamut, etc) and I am completely blown away by Blood Will Tell (PS2, 2004), based on Osamu Tezuka's manga Dororo. 10/10 for me specifically.

wow turns out there WAS a movie, it bombed terribly and I found a director quote from when it was being focus-grouped to death. if the book had ended like the movie I'd be writing some followup like "darn, Scott Smith didn't stick the landing." you even SAY you love it! trust artistic instincts!

Wilmot Works It Out is an interesting followup to Wilmot's Warehouse, and a delightfully fresh take on blind-box jigsaw puzzles that doesn't overstay its welcome or seek to reinvent the wheel. Alas, it's as susceptible as any other game to the devastating it's/its mixup.

only halfway through but I'm really enjoying The Ruins by Scott Smith. it's the kind of horror novel where the fear lives in the planning, presumptive knowledge of a worst case scenario, the outer bounds of that scenario shifting abruptly, and the feeling of being unable to escape it.

watched some of dispatch and holy *shit* should telltale have stayed dead. superhero schlock at its least inspired, with exactly the kind of tired whedon-esque dialogue and sensibilities you'd expect from such fare. your time is better spent on a game with gameplay.
