I've no idea what this heron's expression means. We were nowhere near them, a good 20 metres away on the other side of a small stream. Really, if herons were bigger and stronger they'd be terrifying.

The Speckled Wood was once called the “Wood Argus”, its eye-spots recalling Argus, the many-eyed giant guardian of Greek myth. Its scientific name, “Pararge aegeria”, also has a woodland link: Egeria was a Roman nymph associated with springs and sacred groves. #FolkloreSunday
