Not surprised the PS5 mod, emulation and homebrew scene has exploded in recent months. Once Sony made enough terrible decisions, it was only a matter of time before they incensed the right people. Give it a few years and there will be a fan translation scene.

After reading Terada and Nishino's interview I can safely say the headlines about Sega wanting ports are very interpretive. As far as they said it's the dev team who wants ports, not necessarily Sega as a whole, and they're trying hard to get it made. But I guess that doesn't make for good headlines

we nearly lost VitaDB and Rinnegatamante's involvement to the scene altogether because of these guys. Which is significant because that guy is pretty much carrying the community on his back. They harassed him to the pointof shutting Down VitaDB when he restricted AI submissions.

This is a fantastic article, and pretty much sums up my sentiments as well. I've had a lot of flack from commenters in my Dreamcast/PS1 Fan Translations videos for tearing into certain patches, but in the long run the anti-AI side will win out. AI and fan translations / homebrew do not mix.

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”
