PMC COVlD Update, Sep 28, 2026 (US): 🔸We're in a 13th COVlD wave. 🔸40 states & territories continue to have COVlD outbreaks, stable from last week. 🔸Levels likely peaked between Sep 7-13 at a PMC-estimated 580,000 new daily infections. pmc19.com/map
The US has at least 40 states and territories with COVlD outbreaks, the same number reported last week. These include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic of 40 only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. For example, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, and Tennessee likely have outbreaks, but monitoring is poor.

Nuance:
Note that while PMC uses forecasting to estimate national statistics through Sep 28 and beyond, the state-level data do not, meaning they are now 9 days old. If the national forecast is correct, levels peaked between Sept 7-13, closely aligned with our prior forecasts. This would mean that levels are declining more so than depicted in the map. Levels often decline slowly, suggesting the need for ongoing precautions. Additionally, Biobot and 200 CDC sites are offline this week, and both have experienced major retroactive corrections of late, so the national forecast has more uncertainty than usual. For example, we could see the peak adjusted upward or a double peak. It is unclear how quickly reporting will resume at the offline sites.

Note that while PMC national statistical estimates include forecasting, the state-level data do not, meaning they are now 9 days old. If the forecast is correct, levels peaked between Sept 7-13. This would mean that levels are declining more so than depicted in the map. However, Biobot and 200 CDC sites are offline this week and both have experienced major retroactive corrections of late, so high uncertainty.

The US has at least 33 states/territories with COVlD outbreaks. These include Alaska, Hawai’i, Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

PMC COVlD Update, Aug 24, 2026 The US is experiencing COVlD outbreaks in 23 states/territories (see Alt text). ▪️Largest outbreaks: TX, CA, HI, AK ▪️1 in 136 Americans estimated actively infectious ▪️Highest levels since March 20th Website: pmc19.com Interactive map: pmc19.com/interactive.php
The US has at least 23 states/territories with COVlD outbreaks. These include much of California, Texas, Alaska, and Hawai’i, as well as the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Outbreaks are also present in Washington state, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, and New Hampshire.
There are likely outbreaks in additional states. The summary statistic of 23 only includes counties with observed data, rather than estimated data. Levels in some Texas counties are so high – on par with the national peak of BA.1 Omicron – that it drives up estimates for counties in neighboring states that lack CDC wastewater monitoring systems. Looking closely at the map, notice other instances of Very High counties in one state driving up estimates of an adjacent county in a neighboring state that lacks data. This shows a clear value of the county-level map over the CDC state map.

Early Edition: PMC COVlD Update, Week of Aug 17, 2026 (US) 🔥15 states/territories with COVlD outbreaks 🔥Worst in CA, AK, HI, TX, GU 🔥Reporting irregularities in TX 🔥2.2 million estimated infections/week 🔥1 in 144 people estimated infectious Details: See Alt text. 🧵(1/4)
We have posted this report 48 hours early in light of increased transmission.

The US has 15 states/territories with COVlD outbreaks, characterized by one or multiple counties at high to very high levels. The largest waves are in California, Texas, Alaska, Hawai’i, and Guam. Washington, Nevada, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, and Florida are experiencing regional outbreaks. Finally, there are isolated hot spots in north central Utah (Summit/Wasatch), north central Illinois (Boone/DeKalb), central North Carolina (Cabarrus), and northwest Connecticut (Litchfield).

There are major reporting irregularities in Texas. Of the 19 sites online this week, 3 (16%) reported with high/very high levels. Of the 20 Texas sites offline this week that have reported data for last week, 18 (90%) report high/very high levels, with 16 (80%) reporting very high levels. The reason why high and very high sites are disproportionately offline this week is unknown. This creates a major discrepancy between the PMC and CDC maps. If carrying forward last week’s data for the offline sites, the CDC would place Texas in their “high” category, with 21 of 39 sites at high/very high levels (54%), and just below the threshhold for “very high” (17/39, 44%). Houston was previously a leader in wastewater monitoring with 8 sites but has not reported any data the past two updates.

The US has 5 regional COVlD outbreaks and 4 isolated outbreaks. The regional outbreaks include much of Alaska, California and western Nevada, much of Texas (central Texas sites have been shut off), the region from Kentucky through southern Illinois, and much of southern Florida. Isolated outbreaks include Franklin County in Washington, Bannock County in Idaho, Floyd County in Georgia, and Jasper County in South Carolina. It’s unreal people are ok with it.
Covid Is Not Just A Cold Covid Is Still Killing People At High Rates
The COVID death toll in the US ranges from 49,932-
101,300 people each year.
Even at low estimates, COVID is killing more people annually in the US than:
• Fire Arm Homicides (17,927 deaths per year)
• Car Accidents (43,273 deaths per year)
• Breast Cancer (42,213 deaths per year)
• Prostate Cancer (36,320 deaths per year)
• Infant Mortality (20,145 deaths per year)
• Suicide Deaths (49,000 deaths per year)
Covid deaths are largely preventable
Wearing a respirator mask is the most effective way to stop the spread of Covid.
You can also increase ventilation and use air filter.
Important reminder: Covid is spread pre-symptomatically and asymptotically, which means many people are spreading Covid without knowing.
*The above Covid mortality rates are based on new/active infections and do not include fatalities associated with long COVID.
