This looks like a cool queer history conference!
Call for Papers: Queer Rural History Symposium
Date: Monday 15th March 2027
Venue: The Museum of English Rural Life, Reading, RG1 5EX
Lunch to be provided for all attendees
About the Symposium
Until recently, studies of queer history have focused almost exclusively on the urban sphere, given the greater availability of archival material evidencing queer lives in the city. The few queer rural histories which have been popularised in public consciousness are those of aristocrats in country homes, such as Anne Lister and Vita Sackville-West. However, it goes without saying that people with dissonant sexualities and gender identities lived and loved in all corners of society throughout the centuries, including the countryside. As such, there is a growing appetite for broader research into this area. How did queer people meet those who were like-minded in regions of scarce population density? What forms did their relationships take against a backdrop of criminality and stigma? And how did rural attitudes towards queer people differ to those in the city?
This one day symposium aims to bring together researchers of all backgrounds, and at any stage of their work, to share ideas and discuss methods on this emerging field of study. It works towards the goal of not just filling gaps in academic knowledge that exist for both rural history and queer history, but also to show queer people living in the countryside today that there is, and always has been, a heritage and a place for them.Proposals
We invite proposals on themes such as, but not limited to, the following:
1.
Queer histories of the working and middle classes in rural areas
2.
Methodologies for recovering queer rural histories, such as the use of museum and archive collections
3.
Queer rural networks: how they met and flourished
4.
The response of rural communities to queer relationships
5.
Migration of same sex couples from the city to the countryside and vice versa
6.
The ways in which museums and archive services respond to queer rural history
If you would like to submit a proposal, please send an abstract (max 250 words) along with a short bio (50 words) to symposium organisers Tim Jerrome and Esther Rutter at t.jerrome1@uni.brighton.ac.uk. It is preferable that these come in the form of a Word document attached to the email. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Sunday 6th December 2026.
If you would like to attend the symposium without presenting a paper, let us know via the above email as we need to ensure we do not go above capacity.
We are currently applying for funding to help cover travel costs for those who need it. Please let us know if you would like to attend but would require assistance with travel costs to do so. Priority will be given to attendees where cost would otherwise be a barrier to participation.
Many thanks to Rainbow Canopy (The LGBTQ+ network of Forestry England), the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, and the staff at The MERL for helping us to fund and organise the symposium.

Excited to announce that myself and @altirishhistorian.bsky.social are organising a Queer Studies Symposium in the University of Galway on August 4th 2026. See the Call for Papers below if you'd like to get involved! For any questions, please DM me or email d.gallen2@universityofgalway.ie.
Title: Call for participants. Queer Studies Symposium. University of Galway, August 4th 2026.

Body text: In recent years, the state of academic research into the lives and experiences of queer individuals and communities has advanced dramatically, both in Ireland and abroad. However, this has also come at a time when the hard-won LGBTQ+ rights have come under attack in many parts of the world, and queer people faced increased levels of violence and harassment. To coincide with Galway Pride Week, the University of Galway will play host to a Queer Studies Symposium on Tuesday, August 4th 2026 seeking to showcase some of the fascinating research being done on the past and present of the LGBTQ+ community.

We welcome submissions from all academic fields relating to research on LGBTQ+ topics, including but not limited to: LGBTQ+ history in Ireland and abroad; Queer art, literature, poetry, drama, etc.; Transgender and queer medicine, science, healthcare and psychology; Human rights, persecution and legal status for gender and sexual minorities; LGBTQ+ activism, solidarity and cross-community organizing.

Submissions from doctoral and early career researchers are particularly encouraged. Those interested in participating should send an abstract (max. 250 words) along with a short bio (max. 100 words) to Daniel Gallen (d.gallen2@universityofgalway.ie) by Friday, July 10th 2026. Please include Queer Studies Symposium in the subject line. Proposals for panels will also be considered, and should include a panel title, contact information and bios for all speakers, along with abstracts for each constituent paper.

For additional information or queries, please contact the symposium organisers:
Daniel Gallen, d.gallen2@universityofgalway.ie, School of History and Philosophy.

Call for papers for our new special issue on 'Nocturnal London', edited by Maurizio Cinquegrani, Yihong Zhu, and @mcmccluskey.bsky.social. Abstracts due in by 31 March 2026. All submissions and reposts much appreciated.
Nocturnal London: From Torches to Neon Signs in a City After Dark
Edited by Maurizio Cinquegrani, Yihong Zhu and Michael McCluskey

The editors of this special issue, Maurizio Cinquegrani, Yihong Zhu and Michael McCluskey invite submissions on the theme of London nights. This volume of the London Journal will examine the histories of the city after dark, from its origins in Roman London to the present. Often overlooked, night has long been an essential dimension of urban life: as the city’s appearance change in the lightening of torches, oil lamps, gaslight, incendiary bombs and neon signs, nocturnal imagery, sounds, smells and professions – legal and not legal – emerge from the darkness. For Londoners, the night was never simply the absence of day; it was a time of danger, sociability, and creativity; a theatre of crime and vice, but also of performance, work, and pleasure.

The special issue will place particular emphasis on moments when the character of London’s nights was especially contested, including – but not limited to – the Elizabethan, the eighteenth century, the Victorian, the wartime and the postwar city. The Elizabethan period witnessed the emergence of the city’s playhouses, taverns, and nocturnal entertainments, alongside concerns about disorder and moral decline. Eighteenth-century coffee-houses and club meetings reflected the nocturnal city’s uneasy mix of polite sociability and transgressive undercurrents, while pleasure gardens flourished as spaces of spectacle, employment, cross-class mingling, and erotic charge under cover of darkness. In the Victorian era, the introduction of gaslight transformed both the material and imaginative experience of the night, making the city’s streets newly navigable while also exposing poverty, vice, and vulnerability to the gaze of reformers, police, photographers, and journalists. Wartime London, by contrast, was marked by darkness and silence imposed from above: the blackout and the Blitz remade the urban night as a zone of danger, solidarity, and belonging. The postwar decades, and especially the 1960s, brought the era of Swinging London, in which nightlife became emblematic of youth, fashion, music, and cultural revolution.

Equally important are the particular districts that have defined London’s reputation after dark, including – but again not limited to – the West End and the East End. The East End has been imagined as a zone of poverty, danger, and cultural resilience, alive with street-level economies that flourished under cover of night. The West End has long been associated with theatres, clubs, and the rituals of fashionable display. Soho, especially in the twentieth century, became a microcosm of cosmopolitanism, transgression, and reinvention, providing a home for migrants, artists, musicians, and London’s gay community, who together redefined the possibilities of nocturnal sociability.

Beyond districts and periods, we also invite reflections on the people who navigated, transformed, and reimagined the nocturnal city. The editors are especially keen to foreground questions of diversity and difference. How have London’s nights been inhabited, shaped, and contested by women, by queer citizens, by migrants and racialised communities, and by those whose working lives were tied to the hours of darkness? How was night both policed and celebrated? How did nocturnal spaces serve as arenas of negotiation between surveillance and resistance, authority and anonymity, privilege and precarity? How have representations in literature, theatre, music, art, and film contributed to the cultural meanings of the nocturnal city? We welcome submissions from across the disciplines, including history, literary and cultural studies, art history, archaeology, urban geography, sociology, performance and media studies, as well as ecology, environmental humanities, and architecture and urbanism. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged, as are contributions that combine archival research with theoretical or methodological innovation.

Abstracts of 300–400 words, accompanied by a short biographical statement, should be submitted by 31 March 2026. Full-length articles will be in the range of 6,000–8,000 words and are due by 31 March 2027. Please send proposals and queries to Maurizio Cinquegrani, Yihong Zhu, and Michael McCluskey (m.cinquegrani@kent.ac.uk, scarlett.zhu24@gmail.com, and m.mccluskey@northeastern.edu) with the subject line Nocturnal London Special Issue.
