I've been at a non-flagship public institution for 22 years and the one immutable truth I've learned is that every year the university will tell my department to do more and every year they will give us fewer resources to do it with.

I recently looked into buying and restoring a 1975 Vanguard CitiCar and I had several people frantically warning me that, given the size of trucks and SUVs on the market, I would basically be signing up to be squashed. It was something I had to at least consider.

Here's the latest version of my working paper on the categorical difference between STV and (list) PR and how not appreciating it may have led, on the basis of U.S. data, to conventional wisdom that PR causes party-system fragmentation. jacksantucci.com/docs/papers/... Feedback welcome. More below.
Do party-list proportional representation (PR) and the single transferable vote (STV) produce different results? These reforms are hotly debated in American politics, but most answers to the question come from non-U.S. cases. This paper replicates and extends the best existing analysis of U.S. data. Gosnell (1939) simulated list PR elections from observed STV first choices in Cincinnati (1925-37) and New York City (1937), finding that majority control of government did not change across the systems. Later work took this to mean that both kinds of PR were equivalent with respect to preference aggregation. Reappraisal and extension of the study do not support that view. All else equal, voters’ lower rankings changed majority control in five of 21 elections, one of which was in the original sample. These results offer fresh perspective on ballot exhaustion and ticket-splitting, which can act as STV-specific causes of fragmentation. The paper explains simply how list PR and STV differ. It concludes with notes on research directions and extending the data to more cases.

I think frankly all of this speaks to the really unserious way that Americans generally but the current GOP in particular think about armed conflict, as if it is against the rules for the other side to fight back. It is not. Which is one reason (of many) why maybe we should do less war.

New preprint w/ Jian Gao, @yianyin.bsky.social & @dashunwang.bsky.social. We link campaign finance, faculty rosters, voter files, a ~7,000-scientist survey & bibliometrics to ask if scientists' politics show up in the science that gets made & used. 🧵 osf.io/preprints/so...

Scientific institutions are designed to produce and evaluate claims through shared evidentiary and disciplinary standards, yet they are embedded in an increasingly polarized society. This fundamental tension raises the question of whether scientists’ partisan alignment is associated with the production, circulation, and uptake of scientific knowledge. Here we integrate campaign-finance records, faculty rosters, voter-registration data, an original survey of approximately 7,000 active U.S. scientists, bibliometric data, and measures of uptake in policy documents, patents, and news coverage to map the partisan composition of the scientific workforce, the knowledge it produces, and its uptake within and beyond science. We find that U.S. science is politically asymmetric without being ideologically homogeneous: scientists who make political contributions are overwhelmingly Democratic-aligned, and this asymmetry has widened over time, yet the broader workforce includes many Independents and substantial ideological heterogeneity within partisan groups. Among scientists with strong, behaviorally observed partisan alignments, Democratic- and Republican-authored papers are systematically distinguishable in semantic content across all fields, even after conditioning on fine-grained topic and year. Differences in total scientific citation rates are modest and have narrowed over time, whereas citations occur more often within the same partisan author communities than expected under topic- and year-preserving null models. Uptake beyond science also varies by partisan authorship and domain, with the clearest directional selectivity among ideological think tanks. These findings reveal an uneven profile of partisan association across U.S. science, visible in published content and directional attention, but comparatively limited in aggregate scientific recognition. party composition of donors from 1980-2022voter registration (E) and partisan self identification from a survey (F)
