finally, some good publishing news.
Scribner Will Reprint Don DeLillo's Hockey Novel
Scribner will publish a new edition of Don DeLillo's hockey novel AMAZONS on November 17. Originally published in 1980 under the pseudonym Cleo Birdwell, the book follows, the "erotic exploits of the first woman to play in the National Hockey League." Since its publication, DeLillo has renounced the novel, removing it from his bibliography. He did not publicly acknowledge being its author until 2020. The name Cleo Birdwell will remain on the cover as the author.

DeLillo reportedly resisted offers to reissue the novel for years. "He was so against republishing," his literary agent Robin Straus tells the Times. "Lots of people have asked, and he would always say no." But a new interest by readers in hockey romance sparked by Heated Rivalry, as well as a January New York Times article about the book, has caused the cost of used editions to rise. The author recently changed his mind after a lunch with the novelist Dana Spiotta and his longtime editor at Scribner Nan Graham, in which the book came up (Spiotta describes it as "comic DeLillo with no restraints whatsoever, running jokes, ridiculous set pieces, insane riffs one after another.") Graham called him after the lunch and asked him to reconsider a reprint. DeLillo said, "what the hell, why not."

At the time of its original publication, the book was rejected by Robert Gottlieb, DeLillo's editor at Knopf, and was instead published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston. The book was long out of print and rights had reverted to DeLillo. The author declined to comment to the NYT.

For the first time in years I spend a few hours in the last days reading fiction. It's hard to overstate how good it feels and how stupid I was not to do more of it. Reading a book is just such a wonderful experience. (I read a lot of books but stuck to non-fiction in the last years)

My office desk is very messy, covered in books I’m reading, going to read, can’t put down. All of them are in conversation with my current work-in-progress. Nowadays, it’s my fourth novel and a translation project. The book I can’t put down, for obvious reasons, is The Deluge by Adam Tooze.

The book industry is doom and gloom these days but at @hubcitypress.bsky.social, sales are up 30% over last year because of three national awards for two weird, short novels. Good things still happen to books, y'all. (Also, a reminder to publish what you love and not only what you think might sell.)

The Great Wherever: A Novel
One of Esquire's 22 Most Anticipated Books of 2026One of Publishers Weekly's 10 Most Anticipated Literary Fiction titles for Spring/Summer 2026One of Literary Hub's and BookPage's Most Anticipated Books of 2026The dead are relentless gossips, or at least these dead are.An impulsive and heartbroken woman inherits her father’s share of a Tennessee farm that is rich in family secrets and occupied with busybody ghosts in this sweeping family portrait. At thirty-two, Aubrey Lamb is stumbling through adulthood. An underpaid gig worker in Washington, DC, she’s grieving the end of a serious relationship and the recent loss of her father. When Aubrey learns she has inherited his stake in a sizable Tennessee farm she sees an opportunity to get out of the city—and to erase a mounting pile of debt.Watching her arrival with great interest are four ghosts—Aubrey’s ancestors, who’ve staked their own claims to the farm and who never hesitate to pass judgment on the mistakes made by the living, whether romantic, financial, or sartorial. As Aubrey reconnects with her living family, another story unfolds in parallel: the history of the land, beginning with its purchase by Thomas, Aubrey’s great-grandfather and one of the first Black landowners in his community. Though Thomas hopes to give his children a homestead on which they could flourish, the land proves to be a burdensome inheritance. Over the years, it turns the Lambs against one another, culminating in a catastrophic tragedy that splinters the family and echoes through the decades. Now, as the clock ticks on a potential sale of the farm, the ghosts fear expulsion from the home they’ve made, and Aubrey must weigh the hopes and burdens of her forebears with the very real needs of her future. An expansive family saga told with a wry and distinctly modern voice, The Great Wherever is at once grand and intimate; it explores the ways we learn to define ourselves through and against our family, how we carry on after loss, and how the past lives on in all of us.

WaPo's Ron Charles, in his Book Club newsletter, on Meta's repeated questions about his plans to review Sarah Wynn-Williams's "Careless People": "In my 27 years of reviewing and editing newspaper books sections, no company has ever done this with me."
Last Friday afternoon, I got my first message from Ryan Daniels, public affairs manager of strategic response at Meta. When I declined his invitation to talk by phone, he wrote back again: “I was wondering if the Washington Post was going to write a review about a book that’s coming out this upcoming week on Meta. Do you have a couple minutes to chat?”

So, I called. Daniels said, “We don’t have the book,” but the company had prepared “preliminary statements” about it. Although he didn’t share those with me, he wrote to me again on Saturday and again on Monday trying to get information about our review plans. (In my 27 years of reviewing and editing newspaper books sections, no company has ever done this with me.)Yesterday, when I reached out to Daniels for a response from Meta, he wrote back: “Do you plan to write something about it, or are you just curious how we’re responding?”

It’s always about controlling the narrative. But apparently, that’s not going so well. This morning, “Careless People” is No. 3 on Amazon.

I know this is a long item, the longest I’ve ever written for the Book Club newsletter. But when one of the world’s most powerful media companies tries to snuff out a book — amid other alarming attacks on free speech in America like this — it’s time to pull out all the stops.
