The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

Ahmed al Ahmed, a Lebanese Muslim who owns a Sydney fruit shop, risked his life to disarm one of the Bondi Beach shooters. His courage gives me hope amidst the horror and darkness. Muslims and Jews are not enemies. Our futures, in the Middle East and beyond, are intrinsically bound. A true hero.

May all those who observe Yom Kippur have a meaningful day/fast. May you find your way to forgive yourself and others, may you have the insight to look at your own mistakes, strength to repent, and find means to atone for your them. It also goes for those that can’t/won’t fast for any reasons.

1. No question it’s bad. 2. *Per Haaretz*, the IDF shoots at people in an extremely bad way of crowd control at the . (Armies are bad at that). 3. *Apparently* that starving child has genetic problems that make him more vulnerable than most. The hunger is real, the picture is not representative.

my hottest educational take is that schools should actively, non-punitively teach students how to admit when they don't know something, aren't sure or have made a mistake, with various teaching frameworks adapted to support this ideal, because people who can't admit fault are breaking the world

“Herbert Levine’s liturgical innovations have the potential to heal the rift between secular and religious approaches to Judaism.” —Rabbi Everett Gendler, of blessed memory, author, Judaism and Universalism and A Passionate Pacifist 2/3
“If you’re troubled by traditional Jewish prayers and think they’re rather outdated, here is an alternative. Herb Levine has fashioned a sparkling collection of prayers for a thinking, feeling modern person who wants to express gratitude for the wonder of existence. His powerful prayers are revolutionary, because they are both spiritually uplifting and scientifically accurate.”

TODAY is publication day for Herbert J. Levine's BLESSED ARE YOU WONDROUS UNIVERSE, a humanist non-theistic Jewish prayerbook! It offers a much-needed bridge between secular and religious approaches to Judaism. BYP: www.benyehudapress.c... Amazon: www.amazon.com/Bless... 1/3
From secularism, this siddur takes its commitment to facts and scientific method. From religion, it adopts a stance of wonder and gratitude. Drawn from both worlds, it embraces a commitment to individual and collective responsibility for our lives.
People with a religious world view may find themselves having to stretch toward seeing the world as a face of God that deserves our blessing. Those with a secular world view may find themselves having to stretch toward the possibility that words like “blessed” and “holy” are compatible with the humanist premise that only humans can attribute such qualities to our experience. In a traditional siddur, God is the ultimate actor whose intervention we seek, whether through blessing, redeeming, healing, or forgiving us. In this siddur, we praise the universe, the earth, and Jewish tradition. With respect to moral choices, we address ourselves; humans are the agents who need to hear our own prayer.

Also! If you are interested in Herbert J. Levine's BLESSED ARE YOU WONDROUS UNIVERSE, you also might want to check out his collection of poetry AN ADDED SOUL: POEMS FOR A NEW OLD RELIGION, in a bilingual Jewish/Hebrew edition. www.benyehudapress.c... 3/3
“There’s much to atone for in how I manage my world:
The absence of a god is no excuse.”

Herb Levine writes spiritual Jewish poems from a personal and non-theist perspective. His poems ask us to bring the values that religion offers us—gratitude, awe and responsibility—into our everyday experience without having to be grateful to, responsible to or in awe of a supernatural being. An Added Soul: Poems for a New Old Religion carries forward the themes he began to develop in his first book, Words for Blessing the World (2017). Taken together, the two books offer those seeking to reconstruct and renew Judaism valuable resources for the Jewish holidays and alternatives for worship.

Imagine….

An adult Anne Frank, living out her golden years in Florida.

Moses in his basket, floating all the way to the wilds of Scotland.

An alternate Israel, with zeppelins and ray-guns, hiding a terrible secret.

A Holocaust that succeeded beyond Hitler’s wildest dreams, yet unable to extinguish hope.

What is more Jewish than musings about other histories and other timelines? Even the Passover Haggadah asks “What if the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our ancestors out of Egypt?”

Alternate history asks and tries to answer the unanswerable: What if the Exodus from Egypt had failed? What if the Holocaust had not occurred? What if England had repented of its persecution of the Jews? What if Kabbalah was a popular movie genre? What if Christianity had never split off from Judaism?

These are just some of the scenarios you’ll find in Other Covenants: Alternate Histories of the Jewish People.
