Hey Philly! Want to learn about all the cool science that goes on in the city (including my research)? Come to Start Talking Science at the Science History Institute next Friday, 10/3! Website in the comments!
Image to advertise the event. At the top it says “Science History Institute Museum & Library”, then the main part of the image has two speaking bubbles overlapping with the words, “Start Talking Science Share. Learn. Connect.” over them

Image of a tweet from Gavin Newsom that says, “17 million people just lost health care. 18 million kids just lost school meals. 3 million Americans just lost food assistance. And $3.5 trillion was added to the deficit. All for a tax cut for Trump’s billionaire donors. The ultimate betrayal.”Image of Michael Scott from The Office saying, “Well, happy birthday, Jesus. Sorry your party’s so lame.” But “Jesus” is crossed out and above it is the word “America”. An emoji American flag has also been added to the left side of the image.

Got to check out the new part of the Schuylkill trail tonight on my run. I’m obsessed with the suspension bridge! Philly is seriously the best city
Picture of the part of the Schuylkill trail that leads up to the suspension bridge. It’s a bright sunny day and there are barely any clouds in the sky.

These private grant orgs really said, “We hear that you need more support right now with the funding crisis. We’re actually going to suspend our fellowships until things settle down.” So disappointed in the groups that were supposed to be leaders in the future of science. #postdoc #hhmi

Finding out HHMI is canceling the Hanna H. Gray Fellows competition is heartbreaking. Especially since if they decide to hold it next year, I’ll no longer be eligible
Email from HHMI. Subject is: [External] Update on the 2025 Hanna H. Gray Fellows Competition.
Gray box says: Some people who received this message don’t often get email (the a red cross out of the email) why this is important.
Email reads: Dear HGF Applicant:

I am writing to share that HHMI has made the difficult decision to pause all competitions as we work to ensure continued support for our scientists at a challenging moment for science and science funding. This means that we are not proceeding with the 2025 Hanna H. Gray Fellows Competition.

We received hundreds of thoughtful and inspiring applications, reaffirming the importance of supporting early career scientists through the transition from postdoc to faculty. We thank you for the time, effort, and care you put into your application materials.

Bests,
Leslie

All I'm saying is, the "Me me me me me more leftist than you" people on this app DIDNT EVEN VOTE. Don't listen to any of those dumb motherfuckers, they helped pave the road to hell, and they're still doing it.

Posting this from months ago because we DO have homegrown experience with autocratic regimes in this country. In nearly half this country during the first 6 decades of the 20th century Black people lived under systems of cruelty, voter suppression, hate, state violence & corruption. Ask them!

Seen in the supermarket today. Even if the current avian flu outbreak doesn’t cause widespread human infections, it’s still a big issue that we need to continue to monitor.
Sign on a refrigerator at a grocery store that says, “Important Info. You may notice a price increase on eggs at this time due to the recent Avian influenza outbreak in the Midwest. We apologize for any inconvenience. Giant”

Out-of-pocket health expenditure of 10% or more of their household budget is placing 1 in 8 people worldwide at risk of poverty. Governments must adequately invest in #HealthForAll and protect people – particularly the most vulnerable among us – from high health spending. bit.ly/3OGl5hA

I wish more people were literate enough to truly be able to read & understand this graph, and to be upset by it. Because it's upsetting! We pay SO MUCH MORE for healthcare, and have worse outcomes & lower life-expectancy. The data is clear: We are coming in last in the race for health & well-being.
A graph showing life expectancy (vertical axis) compared to health expenditures per capita (horizontal access) for more than a dozen countries. The USA stands alone way off to the right (expensive) and not nearly as high as any of the others (lower life expectancy).

If you're mad at the health insurance industry — and you should be! — then please remember that every U.S. state has a department of insurance that regulates these insurers. The DoI can come down on them like a ton of bricks for fraudulent behavior. You can file complaints, talk to state reps, etc.

The bad news: Many people don’t get enough iron in their diet. The good news: One ounce of dark chocolate has 3.37 mg of iron Ladies, that’s 5.5 ounces a day that you clearly need. Sorry guys, you’ll get your daily allotment with 2.5.
