I agree with you that it's not outright election theft. But I think it's much more than points shaving. 88,364,572 eligible voters didn't vote in 2024. How many of them were disenfranchised or thought their vote did nothing? Only 1/3 of the total voted Trump. What if everyone had voted?

I don't even like drive through for a related reason. Making something myself might take as long or longer, but it's like the difference between being stopped in traffic on the freeway vs driving along slowly on surface streets: I'd rather be actively engaged than helplessly waiting

This is a good piece, but I did have one editorial note
"Much of the harm done to workers, consumers, tenants, and the general public in Los Angeles currently happens not because the law allows it, but rather because the laws on the books are not being enforced." but I crossed out "Los Angeles" and wrote in "the US"

Before Trump it was just assumed that all this background machinery type shit was in the hands of career civil servants who followed carefully prescribed legal and administrative procedures and one thing DOGE really focused on was disrupting that. Do not assume it still works like that!

I have decided not to be obnoxious and reply to a two-year-old post, but: Football games are called that because they're played *on foot*, not *with the feet*. They're called that to distinguish them from horseback games like polo (which is much, much older).

I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a rat. You know what I kind of miss, though? The tiny mice that scurry around under the tracks at T stations lol. They found their niche! And they were so little! And not in my house!

Somewhat related, climate change means that pests change, too. I (hopefully) just ended a terrible rodent infestation in my garage after 15 years of not a single one. Then I heard on a local podcast that Orkin has nominated Los Angeles as the new rat capital of the US.

It's also why many people who do this are unaware of what they're doing. Most of us rarely question our default settings until life shoves them in our faces. "Median American", "average voter" -- these mean white men to many people. That big tent looks mighty empty if you're only counting white men.

The mechanism is often treating conservative white discomfort as a veto, while the support of people most affected by the policy is treated as automatic. That’s not coalition-building; it’s hierarchy disguised as pragmatism.

The election bullshit that worries me IS the usual Republican bullshit, ✨ Now With Extra SCOTUS Bullshit ✨. The disenfranchisement that happens at the local level absolutely affects what happens at the national level And as a country, we mostly shrug and do nothing (I don't have a solution either)

liberalism is a politics of personal comfort above all else. they may find this censorship silly or even distasteful, but what they really hate is being reminded that genocide is happening or being expected to do anything to stop it. there is no floor to what liberals will sacrifice for comfort.
