The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.

Revealed: how companies ‘secretly’ use billions of litres of public water in drought-hit England
Exclusive: As millions of people face hosepipe bans, many companies are not required to report, let alone cut, use of public supply Less than 1% of businesses in England use more water than the daily needs of 10 million people, as millions of households face hosepipe bans and three-quarters of the country is in drought. Businesses across England use 2.6bn litres a day from the public water supply, which includes potable and non-potable water provided by water companies. In total, businesses account for about 30% of public supply use, with two-thirds of their consumption in water-stressed areas, according to Mosl, the organisation that operates England’s business water market. MP demands end to Scottish Water bonuses as local beaches battle sewage
An Edinburgh MP has written to the First Minister demanding an immediate halt to £258,000 in executive bonus payments at Scottish Water, branding the sums unacceptable while local beaches continue to be affected by sewage. Chris Murray, MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, has called for urgent action from the Scottish Government following a series of pollution incidents that have forced beach closures and seen wet wipes and sanitary products wash up on local shores. The intervention comes after repeated sewage overflow incidents at Portobello Beach, including recent occasions where the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) had to advise the public against entering the water.
