Tonight's book club meeting discussed The Wind's Twelve Quarters, a collection of short stories be Le Guin. Some of these I had read before, some of them were new, and rather fatefully it contains The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. Which is as good a reason as any to link some of my work:

the ones who fly away — The Great Surf
“Hello!” says the dock officer with a winning smile. “Welcome to Omelas!” “Thanks so much,” V.V. says, matching his energy and handing both their passports up. “It’s great to be … here?” Siri has hi...

I imagine some of them are talking themselves into it a little but that's an intellectually culpable action itself, people are responsible for what they say

it's ultimately an american version of the self-loathing macho neurosis that forms english redwallism and I think it's good to give it some time under the blowtorch because it'll be just as bad if it gains prominence

honestly quite a few people didn't and instead insisted, and continue to insist, that he is the authentic voice of the working class and in fact an unusally strong and good candidate and his detractors are effeminate and gay

implementation problem with DC statehood is if you make the city a state, where do you squeeze in the much smaller, less important city that is inexplicably the state capital

it's possible, but tbh I'm assuming burnham is going to end up the 'change nothing, the problem is Comms' candidate which will remain the most comfortable lane for a critical mass of labour MPs and supporters certainly more likely than under starmer though

but conversely: phillipson, streeting, certainly others, sincerely believe in this stuff. they think it is a good and important thing they have achieved and they will fight tooth and nail to avoid a reversal.

it's one thing for an MP who doesn't have much interest to duck around questions about judgements and 'guidance' issued by other people, quite another to ask them to affirmatively vote for sweeping transphobic legislation under their own name, and with the greens and lib dems sniffing around to boot
150
fusipon @fusipon.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
they are going to have to legislate, but the problem imo is they've been deliberately avoiding just that because the showdown between the party's radicalised transphobes (including senior ministers, and possibly the prime minister!) and the rank and file party is going to be absolutely gruesome

The UK has a real problem where lots of load-bearing institutions have simply quiet quit their jobs, but still aggressively demand the respect that would be due to people who are still actually doing something for society

there is also a parallel in the western palestinian cause itself, which has blown up very quickly in the last couple of years for obvious if grim reasons but which was preceded by a long, grinding campaign to delegitimise israel and legitimise palestine in mainstream anglophone liberal circles

my favourite thing about resident evil/biohazard is one of its titles has that cool, weird, kind of oblique vibe you get from a JP title with an english name, and the other title has that much more ordinary and marketable feeling you get from a 'good' localisation, but they're the wrong way round

When Charlotte Ballad was young she wanted to be a magical girl. Life, and family history, saw her grow up to be a mercenary. Read the prologue of my in-development novel Phantasm Arm here: www.thegreatsurf.com/fiction/2025...
It’s late now and through the windows Lumikki can make out the city as more than just sodium-vapour filling the unseen contours of the land. The rain-stained concrete low-rises, the flaking stucco stores, the discordant pulse of red and green traffic lights playing to nearly empty streets. She spares a furtive glance at the other elevator. Its floor display is counting up.

The girl leans in the way. “There are a lot of moving parts to this that I don’t have time to explain, but I will once I’ve got you out of here. Can you live with that?”

There isn’t a single reassuring thing in her expression, but Lumikki nods.

“Okay. Now can you hold these?”

She has her stilettos pinched between two knuckles, and Lumikki takes them almost automatically. Then she says, “Why?”

“Because we’re going out that window.”

“Ha?” is all Lumikki manages before the girl whips her arm around in a circle, the nail of her index finger shrieking on the glass. Then she gives the window a sharp tap and a humming disc nearly as tall as Lumikki, nearly as thick as her wrist, rotates on its axis.

The girl pulls it out one handedly and rolls it down the hall. Lumikki’s head tracks after it, mouth agape, and when she turns back the girl is standing right in front of her.

“Please don’t,” Lumikki says in a very small voice, and is immediately swept up in the girl’s arms.

“My name’s Charlotte, by the way,” she says, planting a foot on the cut glass, threading her body through the window, and launching the two of them into the warm night air.

i do not know how i could describe qualia to someone who does not recognise them simply by my pointing. the difference in opinion seems to be very basic. i guess i should look into people who have changed their minds one way or another

fusipon @fusipon.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
fwiw as a person who finds the notion of qualia intuitive i have come to a similar suspicion from the 'other side', after thinking about how 'obviously' wrong i find a lot of qualia-scepticism and the fact that inner experience is more variable than is assumed, viz. aphantasia etc
