Our paper on how orangutan mothers plan and alter their space use at personal costs so their offspring may play with similarly aged offspring (independent of kinship and fruit productivity) has transitioned from preprint to peer reviewed publication doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

Maternal ranging strategies facilitate offspring social play at energetic cost in the most solitary ape | PNAS
In most vertebrates, social play among peers is considered essential for behavioral development. Yet in solitary species bearing single offspring, ...

ahah. I tried getting it to translate a previous version into the templates of this foundation. The results were less than helpful... Tho' getting consistency checks across documents was very very useful.

ah! I now checked the github issues and I can see that it's about mean vs median, as I highlighted in my issue (suggesting that the skewed t uses the mode instead). But I can see the consistency point, hmm, not sure if the best solution is a second exgaussian, or a tutorial w custom families.

Oh yeah I remember reading that, thanks for the reminder! Have you added an issue to brms ? (Not at my computer today). I’d be also happy to help figuring out how to port it to brms once I’m done w this grant

Yeps, that’s what I used. The exgaussian does fine for the tails, but it severely underestimates the peak at 50-80ms

What would you want to see in a textbook (free, online, jupyter/marimo style) about quantitative/computational approaches for analyzing naturalistic social interactions (e.g., face-to-face conversations)? I'm in the early phases of drafting one and would value external input on its audience's needs.

Random little investigation I saw that Claude Opus 5.5 can now create quite appealing "science explainer" shorts as one-shot prompt: "Pick a problem or mystery that obsesses you and solve it as best you can & make a movie we can share on social media about it" So I wondered where info came from?

and to be super clear, in case we go there: yes, RCTs are amazing. No, RCTs cannot carry the whole burden of science. Even when assessing effectiveness & side effects of drugs, we need multiple approaches (e.g. pharmacovigilance on messy and confounded spontaneous reports of adverse drug reactions).

Science is hard, we should all work hard to do it better, & we should all help each other (also) with methodological developments and tutorials. However, this is an endless endeavor with no one solution. To translate a collective tentative striving into one normative framework seems disingenuous

on my second to last day of the trip, I decided I would run 20 km along the Sein and back. I was very proud of myself, my first 20km and I didn't even hurt in any specific place. Then in the afternoon I arrogantly decided to suddenly sprint across the street as the traffic light turned red.

I often wondered whether funders themselves should provide a checklist (one of the few cases where I think checklists would be useful for research). I know we should be good at close readings, but sometimes the formal aspects are so pointless my mind skims over them.

This is how zombie statistics are born. It's tempting to speculate but best not to. Even research that tries to come up with estimates is often pretty bad because it's very difficult to accurately measure these things, let alone vibe about them.

my experience is that it's also logistics. longitudinal clinical studies have a lot of moving parts & lots people involved with strong opinions and pet setups; and nobody has the time to challenge the status quo (meeting w funders, clinical duties, logistical admin). so you go with whatev consensus

Riccardo Fusaroli @fusaroli.eurosky.social · 14/09/2026
yeah, I am working on some longitudinal datasets on clinical populations and while I do understand the pressures to get things started and keep them running, agh, so many things that could have been planned better, and the effort used would have been so much more fruitful.

Ahah in my cognitive modeling course whenever we find issue with fitting and/or recovering parameters, the usual ‘best’ solution is to simulate changes in the experimental setup. It works every single time 😅 so yes, we should def use that power preemptively!
