First #FungiFriday of October, actually feel fall-ish in SC. #FungiFriends from a couple weeks ago. Again, no rain.
Decomposing Earth star mushroom. This was the first one I’ve ever seen! I would’ve loved to find it a couple weeks earlier. It is a moldy looking black and gray mushroom with its edges peeled back around the side sitting in a nest of green moss and leaves. it looks a lot like an odd flower.I believe this is a huge likin, similar to a turkey tail, but growing on the ground. The center is a velvety chocolate color, and the irregular edges pale to deep orange. It is about the size of a dinner plate. This is a more traditional looking turkey tail type lichen. It has grown up around a fallen tree branch, with the blades of the lichen growing around little tiny branchy sticks, which is not something I’ve seen very much before. The colors are faded tans and oranges, with white edges on the lichen. They are growing out of a pine branch laying on the ground that has become covered in lichen and some green moss.

Overall, not a great month of bird photography, but I'll be able to seek out birds longer and further for it! Baby American Dipper 2028? That being said, crow feet full moon with cameo snowy egret is my favorite of September. 🪶 🐦‍⬛ #BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth

Finally! I was able to walk the dogs in my favorite patch of woods. I was rewarded with a variety of #FungiFriends. Still researching, not sure exactly what this one is. #fungifriday
Tiny beige mushrooms in various stages of growth, the largest being the size of my index finger knuckle, the smallest size of my pinky fingernail. They are growing out of a vertical slit in a rotting tree stump. The sun is shining through the more mature mushroom, showing off its gills.

It was colonoscopy day for me. Luckily, all turned out well. On my way out this morning, this beautiful tiger #moth greeted me on my porch floor. Ants were starting to gather around, so I picked it up and put it outside on a plant and was rewarded with a beautiful view of all of the wings. #insects
After placing the beautiful moth on one of my plants outside, it spread it’s wings. Now you can see the reddish orange under wings with black spots on them as well as the tan and white tiger striped wings. I hope it was happy to be away from the ants and off my porch. A 10 and a black tiger moth with its wings together, resting on a concrete porch floor. You can see the delicate fringe around the wings. and the different articulated bits of antennae.A frontal view of the same moth on the floor, where you can see it’s proboscis if you zoom in

In such moments the world grows quiet.
You feel that you are standing
before a small illuminated room
inside another human being,
a room where hope still sits by the window,
watching the evening arrive. &then you understand
why poets have trusted the eyes for so long #imageandverse #eastcoastkin
A photo of a diamond window with sky and leaves.

Windows to the soul.

Aritra Das

They say the eyes are windows to the soul,
an old saying, worn smooth
by centuries of quiet repetition.
Yet each time I look into a pair of human eyes
the phrase feels newly discovered,
like a small truth rediscovered in the dust of time.
For the eyes do not merely see;
they remember.
Within them lie the patient sediments of living,
childhood afternoons still warm with sun,
roads walked in silence beside someone beloved,
the slow ache of losses
that taught the heart its gravity.
Sometimes a person smiles
while the eyes hold a deeper weather,
a distant rain, perhaps,
or the calm after a storm
that once shook the branches of their life.

But more often,
if you look long enough,
and gently enough,
something tender begins to appear.
A kindness.
A light that has survived
through disappointments, through ordinary days,
through the small abrasions
that time leaves upon every soul.
In such moments the world grows quiet.
You feel that you are standing
before a small illuminated room
inside another human being,
a room where hope still sits by the window,
watching the evening arrive.
And then you understand

What a hectic week! No time for mushrooms, or anything outside besides mowing. This morning I happened to spot this pale tiger moth #caterpillar. It was definitely ready for a close-up! #insects
A very fuzzy, pale yellow caterpillar with long clumps of black whiskers, and a few clumps of white whiskers. It is sitting on the side of my house, on a white background. it is about an inch and a half long.
