When I started writing about Supreme Court expansion, you couldn’t get the question *asked* in a poll. The first time I saw it actually polled, it was 8%. Now, we here.

I'd put money down (although not on Kalshi or Polymarket, obviously) that they do host it (and mumble something about "newsworthiness").

Man, this answer from Ta-Nehisi Coates about how he felt about Kamala Harris saying that she wants to have “the most lethal fighting force in the world” is really good. He talks about why she might feel like she has to say that, but gives most of his response to the victims of that lethality

The audiobook for A WALL IS ALSO A ROAD is low-key blowing up, and it's all because of the incredible narrator Jess Nahikian, who is delivering queer David Attenborough vibes. Here is a delicious sample for you to hear! Get the audiobook wherever they are sold, or check it out from your library!

Apple Adjustable Keyboard III.
A picture of an Apple Adjustable Keyboard III, which is two halves of a white aluminium keyboard turned through 90 degrees and the text running vertically. on the right side running from top to bottom is zxcvb, asdfgh and qwerty columns. on the left side is the same damned mess. The two halves also tilt inwards towards each other.

Abolish ICE. Fire them all. Prosecute their crimes. Start with prosecuting the crimes first and work your way backward if that makes you more comfortable. But we cannot live in a country with this level of elite impunity.

A lovely point but also San Francisco leadership is actively displacing people who already live here and closing the few underfunded services left in order to increase property values for the class of people who own everything. Progressive housing policies have never been tried

Everybody's loving this clip, for good reason, but it should remind everyone that cities therefore have an obligation to build enough housing that all these marginalized and outcast people can come and afford to live in them on minimum wage *without* becoming homeless. YIMBY!

Unfortunately, no, the AI companies also stole everyone's copyrighted code, too. In excess of even the permissive "please contribute back" free software licenses.

One might (try to) argue that the trade-off is worth it, but that is a whole separate argument. If engineers and investors don't come to grips with why almost everyone else is pissed off, it's going to go badly before we get to that argument.

Sure, he's wrong about how many tokens it takes, because he's not a software engineer. That's not the core of his point, which is "the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks". And that is true.

this isn't some abstract argument either: all of our decades of experience with large, complex safety-critical systems shows that building a safety culture is the only way to manage and mitigate risk responsibly... and that's impossible to reconcile with a longtermist utilitarian perspective

The next five graphs are even less convincing, and the argumentation becomes even weaker. It was almost impossible for me to imagine how a seemingly intelligent person could have written it—but I found a secret clue buried in the text itself.

A.I. has the potential to enhance the way we live in the same way. It saved me and my colleague, Will McGrew, many hours of prowling the internet to research this essay. That left us with time to do other tasks.
