Of course, as with any government initiative, it is natural to be sceptic about the project’s ability to fulfill its goals, especially since previous initiatives, such as Cool Japan, have been vastly criticized and failed to deliver on its promises.

Notable among the selection is Bocchi the Rock and Frieren director Keiichiro Saitou, but also ex-MAPPA producer Makoto Kimura, who recently set up his anime studio, BLUE RIGHTS. Global Anime Challenge aims at promoting these creators as household names of the anime industry.

The Global Anime Challenge, an initiative by the Agency of Cultural Affairs, has revealed the directors, producers and animators which will be participating in the project. They will be sent for an internship abroad with the goal of producing a pilot film by 2026.
