This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

As is the case in virtually every actual housing "abundance" policy fight that has ever occurred in a U.S. city not named SF or LA, it's conservatives and centrists standing in the way of upzoning/density and progressives and "the groups" organizing in support of it.

Like. I have said it before and I'll say it again: when your industry's founding pitch is "what if there was a tool with human-level intelligence that didn't have human rights," then regardless of whether the tech is actually sentient (which it isn't), nothing downstream of that will be ethical.

As we've learned from studying 100s of rumors across 3 U.S. elections — including those that fed the "big lie" in 2020 — many false rumors & conspiracy theories take real election issues & wrap them into a false/misleading story by falsely assigning blame, exaggerating impact, & ignoring remedies.

For most Leftists, what is in the public interest is nearly always at odds with the hoarding of private interests. But when crafting financial objectives + strategies, we rely on concepts designed for private finance. To serve public ends, public finance must develop a new language and logic. 🧵

A lot of universities will be facing big deficits and looking to cure what ails them. I just want them to be thoughtful about it.
Screenshot of article which reads: At the same time, new job-focused majors may not be sustainable — and can even backfire. Dominique Baker, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware, pointed to the rise in computer-science degrees in the 2010s. At the time, they seemed like the best way to secure a high-paying salary after graduation, she said. But with the rise of generative artificial intelligence, computer-science jobs are increasingly hard to find, and enrollment in such programs is falling significantly.
“When you tie the viability, the financial viability in particular, of an institution really tightly to jobs creation on that scale,” especially as a four-year institution, she said, “you have to be really careful, because you can find that in 10 years that program that you poured all your money into — worthless.”

When a social breakdown or impasse surfaces, which social arrangements are treated as set in stone, and which are expected to adjust or be destroyed? I think versions of this question can be addressed to institutions of austerity and carcerality. Both create harm to avoid reorganizing power.
