They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Our first new title for 2027 will be IN THE SILVER LIGHT OF A STAR THAT IS NO STAR by @froid.bsky.social, a mindbending Borgesian trip into noir, folklore, and lands that exist only in language. 15 February 2027. Pre-orders available now at www.ThisIsSplice.co.uk/fiction/in-the-silver-light

I'm excited to announce that my debut novella comes out next year from @thisissplice.bsky.social. This is a strange little book about a detective, a hoax, a fictional language, and a place that doesn't exist (or does it?). It has two halves that unfold in parallel, on the left and right pages.

Rooted in a true crime, this book spins out details of the crime, brief tales about real and fictional people involved in it, the author’s own travels and research. There’s even a bit of sci-fi. Somehow, it all works! It’s odd and fascinating and unlike anything else I’ve ever read.

Let's talk about a book series NOT getting attention that is among the finest of the decade: James Elkins' Five Strange Languages, the latest of which is Stories, Like Illnesses-- just released to resounding silence. Prior 2 novels are among my favorites ever and the new one so far is as good 1/?

So grateful for her body of work. I’ve read Holy the Firm more times than I can count, and it astonished me every single time. She was a remarkable writer and thinker.

I’m obsessed with this pair of novellas. They pose twin puzzles, with many clues and hints as to what actually happens and how the narratives may intersect. And they are impeccably written. Stephen Beachy maintains a measured tone while giving an almost cosmic register to his lonely characters.

Mario Bellatin is a fascinating writer. This novella is partly excerpts from a lost (fake?) work by Joseph Roth, partly interpretations of that work, and partly memoir-ish fragments. Recommended if you like seeing a writer pushing, or perhaps breaking apart, the boundaries of form.

"The Girls is many things at once. It’s a comedy but it's also a portrait of an England of down-at-heel seediness, where flower shows, dirty coppers and the serial killer Dennis Nilsen are part of the same social fabric." Me on John Bowen's 1986 novel The Girls, reissued by Vintage and McNally:

Doesn't the phrase "a fictional staple in the literature world" suggest that...the book doesn't actually exist? My favorite fictional staples are the works of Archimboldi. Or maybe the Necronomicon.
Screenshot of the cover of Lord of the Flies with the following blurb: "	A fictional staple in the literature world, Lord of the Flies follows a group of boys stranded on an island, where the fight for survival cascades into brutal chaos."
