Vladimir Putin wants a divided Europe to weaken us. We cannot let him win. For the sake of our own security, we need to rejoin the EU.

Well, the slightly lower gravity AND the denser atmosphere, both were necessary.

frjosom @frjosom.bsky.social · 4h
The denser atmosphere was necessary for another story point—the physics required it. But that suddenly became an issue, because the people live on a small island that is divided up by tall walls—travel by boat is needed just to get around. So: outriggers, catamarans, and trimarans, plus lower sails.
100
frjosom @frjosom.bsky.social · 5h
Likely the sails would both be angled the same way at the same time, unless the wind was very much from behind.
000
frjosom @frjosom.bsky.social · 5h
I need to work out how a boat would sail w/ 2 crabclaw sails set on its sides like this, but I think it could—with a crew. The issue for the inhabitants is the lack of manufacturing & metal, plus stronger wind shear & taller waves... tho there's no surf to speak of… no gradual incline up to "shore".

#OctoberWorldbuilders There are rowing competitions for individuals and for teams, both sprints and circumnavigating The Island. Sailing competitions likewise have team and solo classifications. Remember: boats are lower and wider on Celesta due to slighly lower gravity and a denser atmosphere.

It just occurred to me that all of Joshua Dagon's glamour stone short stories—now contained in the anthology "Diabolical Blessings"—share a common theme: protecting someone you care about. It isn't the primary theme in each story, but it affects every plot! Bravo, JD! books2read.com/diabolical-b...

#WIPSnips The word 'wall' appears a bunch in this story, which should be expected in a book about an inn. But while most uses of the word aren't too much about the wall itself, this one is. Here, I discuss the secrets of the inn's walls.
Welcome to the Good Thyme Inn

The Good Thyme Inn quite literally held secrets galore within its walls. The most extensive overhaul occurred during Marmalade’s tenure as the innmaster, soon after Shallot was born. Shallot had vague memories of the reconstruction, of seeing complex clockwork before they were sealed away behind wood panels, but those memories had formed her image of the inn-world within her mind.
During the reconstruction, hidden nooks had been installed throughout the inn. Small, secret places where one could stash precious items. Marmalade had been fond of hiding coins in odd places for fear of losing everything if bandits came and demanded all the money under her desk. Shallot had once believed her great-aunt was paranoid; bandits never came into town. Until she grew up and realized ‘bandits’ had always been Marmalade’s underhanded way of referring to the baron and his men.

#OctoberWorldBuilders The Island is over a kilometer high at its center, and 13 km across at its shore. With its position at about 30 degrees south, and with FirstDay pointing almost exactly East, The Island gets easterly winds that bring mosture mostly to FirstDay, SecondDay, and LastDay...
Diagram of a circle with 7 even segments, representing "The Island" from Garrett MacArthur's forthcoming "Secrets of the Island Planet" novel, and showing different weather placement for The Island with it positioned at approximately 30 degrees south on the ocean planet Celesta. The right side of the island has more moisture and wetter climate, and the western side has more scrub.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward
