how satisfying that you found it. An aside: Georgic was one of the handful of 'Windrush' ships in the late 1940s that brought passengers from the Caribbean to the UK and later sailed as a carrier of 'ten pound poms'....

oh dear - I've looked at the merchant shipping movement cards and neither Llangibby nor Arundel Castle were en route to Iceland in summer 1940 - both either in Glasgow or en route to E/S Africa... Maybe it's not a union castle line ship! Or my funnel count reckoning went wrong. anyway! good luck!

Been digging about on www.bandcstaffregister.com/page4948.html for too long... here are the ships requisitioned in WW2... I've had a look at them and those with 2 funnels seem to be Arundel [not requistioned until December 1940], Windsor and Llangibby Castles

Anyone recognise these two ships? They're troopships (possibly Union-Castle Line?) sailing to Iceland from the UK in late July/early August 1940. #filmcataloguing
A black and white film frame shows a troopship underway at sea. It has two low funnels and a repeating camouflage pattern on its starboard side. A black and white film frame shows a troopship underway at sea. It has two low funnels, dark hull and lighter superstructure.

Happy #bivisibilityday to all who celebrate (and those who don't). It's the perfect time to check out Martha Robinson Rhodes' new book about bisexuality and multiple gender attraction: academic.oup.com/book/62646 - hot off the press this year
The book cover of Martha Robinson Rhodes 'Bisexuality and Beyond: A History of Multiple-Gender Attraction in Modern Britain'The abstract of Martha Robinson Rhodes' new book Bisexual and Beyond: '

Bisexuality and Beyond is the first historical study of bisexuality in Britain. It uses original oral histories alongside extensive archival research to explore the creation of the gay/straight binary from the perspective of those who fell beyond its limits, challenging historical narratives about liberationist politics and identity formation. Historians of sexuality agree that the binary divide between gay and straight is a relatively recent invention, only becoming dominant around the mid-twentieth century. The history of bisexuality is the missing piece in this narrative. This book looks at the broader circumstances of this period to investigate the problems of defining bisexuality and its politics coherently, and of navigating its relationship to gay and lesbian politics. This book therefore sets out the concept of ‘multiple-gender-attraction’, an umbrella term that encompasses and extends beyond the category of bisexuality. It is not an identity label, but a description of potential attraction, drawing on queer historical approaches to explore the distinctions between emotions, behaviour, and identity. Through detailed histories of the gay liberation movement, lesbian feminism, and Britain’s first bisexual organizations, Bisexuality and Beyond argues that the binary of gay and straight was created and reinforced by gay and lesbian politics as well as dominant straight society. By placing bisexuality and multiple-gender-attraction squarely in the frame, this book changes how we understand the emergence of identity politics in modern Britain, challenging established notions about the ‘queer’ inclusivity of counter-cultural activism, and intervening in histories of identity, selfhood, community, and radicalism.'

CALL FOR PAPERS - Modern British History and the 'Environmental Turn'. A two-day workshop organised by @maxlong.bsky.social and myself at Lincoln College, Oxford, 16-17 September. Deadline for abstracts is 15 May. Details in poster below, please share.
This two-day workshop will explore several questions. How can environmental history complement or offer alternatives to existing historiographical narratives and periodisations in British history? What new actors, events, or phenomena might come to the fore? How should it foster engagements with places beyond its national borders or with other disciplines? Is environmental history different from longstanding traditions of ‘landscape’ or ‘urban’ histories of Britain? What contributions can historians make to environmental advocacy and policymaking? And how might a focus on the environment reshape teaching in British history?

To take part, participants should submit a 300 word proposal for a short ‘position paper’ (approx. 2500 words) that will be pre-circulated at the workshop. These position papers will address the place of environmental approaches and themes within modern British history (1800 to the present) from the perspective of the participant’s own research. Participants will orally summarise their papers at the workshop. The event is free to attend and includes lunch and refreshments.

Submissions are welcomed across a range of perspectives and topics, including but not limited to: energy, extraction, non-human actors, pollution, toxicity, rural and urban landscapes, everyday environmental histories (including how they are shaped by class, gender, and race), imperialism and decolonisation, ‘green’ policy, activism, and the political economy of the natural world.

Please send proposals and a one-paragraph biography in a single PDF to andrew.seaton@manchester.ac.uk by 15 May 2026. Please also direct enquiries to this address.

This event is organised by Dr. Max Long (Oxford) and Dr. Andrew Seaton (Manchester).
