Took daughter to see Niall Horan (of former One Direction fame) at the 02 last night. Niall was great but the highlight was when he spoke disparagingly about the Jubilee Line (part suspended, thanks TfL), which I personally very much appreciated.

I've spent today reading a range of academic monographs, scholarly articles and questionable websites in order to write two broadly accurate sentences about public pension systems in post-war Europe. The sentences have been written. Are they accurate? God knows.

Saw the new Sense & Sensibility. It's as though the director took each key scene/character in turn and thought: 'how do I do this differently from Ang Lee?' Mostly it works except for Brandon's hipster beard, Willoughby appearing in a not at all dashing bucket hat & some very odd dancing.

Saw Pressure today at the cinema. Andrew Scott is, as everyone says, terrific in it, but whenever I see him on screen I cannot help but think of Barbara Taylor's utterly wonderful, Covid-crazed rumination on how she yearns to be Scott's mother: solitudes.qmul.ac.uk/blog/on-want...

On the current friendship-in-crisis discourse, I cannot recommend enough BAD FRIEND by @tiffwattsmith.bsky.social Part cultural history, part memoir, it troubles our idealised contemporary view of friendship (esp. female) in which we are always emotionally attuned & available to each other.
