Today our latest report is published: The electro-fortification of Britain. British households are once again battered by another international energy crisis. The best solution is to cut oil and gas use, and one effective and immediate way to do that is using electrotech. Report 🔗 at thread end

The crisis continues - keeping track of high power prices, of course 2026 is not as extreme as 2022/23 but we have now faced a very consistent run of high prices ever since the March.
Chart by Ember. Running total of days per year where the average short run marginal cost of gas power in Britain was above £100/MWh. In 2020 it was 0, in 2022 it was over 300, 2026 is the second highest in terms of year-to-date total.

We've just published data on this! On average over the first two days of the heat wave, solar homes in Britain generated five hours of 'free' air con use each, per day! Our report: ember-energy.org/latest-insig... (To be fair, the journalist asked a leading question, then made it the headline.)

UK solar homes power equivalent of five hours of daily air con use during heatwave | Ember
As a weeklong heat wave rolls over Europe, increased domestic solar generation matches well with air conditioning.

Today we've published a brief look at solar-powered air-conditioning use in the UK, with some minor relief for solar households. In the first few days of this June heatwave, a typical household with solar power generated the equivalent of five 'free' hours of air-conditioning use per day. 🔗 Below

☔ On windy days, when gas power is almost entirely displaced, very low wholesale prices are recorded. Put another way, when gas falls to below 20% of the power mix, prices fall like rain. In this way, the benefits of clean power are felt long before full decarbonisation of the grid is achieved.
Chart by Ember (energy think tank): Graphic shows the average daily wholesale power price in Britain over time, against gas share of the generation mix. The takeaway is that while there is an overall trend, for days when the gas share is below 20%, the price drops significantly. The price-benefit of clean power is beginning to be felt as gas is almost entirely displaced from the grid on certain days.

Today yet another solar generation record has been broken, as is perhaps regular for this time of the year. This one marks a milestone though: 15 GW for the first time, 50% higher than the peak during the previous gas crisis.
Solar generation peak in 2026 is far above previous years, despite 2025 itself being a strong year - chart shows daily generation on the peak generation day for each year 2013-2026

For the second time in four years, the UK is facing high gas-fired electricity costs due to a global fossil crisis. The difference between four years ago and now? Wind and solar capacity deployed since 2021 is reducing gas reliance and saving an estimated £7 million per day!

What does it mean when we say the North Sea is a mature basin? This by @frankiemayo.bsky.social illustrates it well. The major spoils have already been tapped, additional discoveries are smaller and more technically complex (expensive). You can't argue with geology.

New generation record in 2026: As of January, wind and solar have now consistently out-generated fossil gas power for 12-months in a row, for the first time. A threshold has now been crossed where wind and solar have generated more than gas through winter, spring, summer and autumn.

Britain's first offshore wind farm was installed in December 2000. Since then, the national wind industry has expanded to record levels. Modern turbines, such as those at Moray West in 2026, are larger, placed deeper, and generate more power than ever.

This really is a great article for combining energy system transition with nerdy weather insights. Fully recommend a read. One trend below I've personally missed is the up-sizing of average resi-PV. I'm a dinosaur, always just used the '3kW' assumption from FiT days, but it's dying out.

DNV today published its 'CCS to 2050' report, an optimistic reference for risks and local policies - but please note there is a mistake in the UK section. The UK no longer has an "ambition is to capture and store 20-30 MtCO2/yr by 2030" - this was publicly deemed unachievable by UK gov't in Dec.

We've just published an updated analysis of the 2027-2031 subsidy package for Drax. This could be the beginning of the wind down, but focus must move to the post-2031 phase out now. For lots of charts, stats and commentary - check out the link in the thread:
Chart illustrating annual subsidies from 2017 to the present, ranging between 600 million and 900 million pounds. Projected subsidies for 2027 to 2031 decline to approximately 400 million to 500 million pounds per year. This chart shows the difference between the Contracts for Difference strike price for biomass power generation at Drax vs the most recent strike prices for offshore wind, onshore wind, and solar which are all around 50% lower.

Oil and gas production is in long-term decline in the UK. This is one of my favourite charts from our new analysis of how Clean Power 2030 will affect UK oil, gas and biomass imports. Full report in comments. #energysky
Chart interpretation: Oil production declines from the 1970-90 peak to significantly lower in 2020s, with new fields contributing much less as a proportion too.

Biomass subsidies - Good news for bill payers, and bad news for Drax The next subsidies announced for big biomass are *potentially* far more restrictive than previously enjoyed by Drax. This could signal the beginning of a wind down of expensive and polluting biomass power generation. However...
A chart of historic generation at Drax vs the new subsidy cap. What is shows is that the subsidy cap is set far lower than most previous years generation level - meaning a likely lower volume of CfD payments going forward.
