Dr. Margaret Allen: the first woman to perform a heart transplant (Stanford, 1985). • 1985: Founded the first heart transplant program, U. of Washington Med Center & served as its director until 1996 • 1994: First woman president, United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) #WomenInSTEM #MedSky
A black-and-white portrait of Dr. Margaret Allen (born 1948), the pioneering American cardiothoracic surgeon who became the first woman to perform a heart transplant and founded the heart transplant program at the University of Washington Medical Center. She is positioned in the center of the frame against a softly blurred, natural outdoor background of dense foliage or hedges. She wears a dark top over a light-colored, knit turtleneck collar that frames her neck. Her long, wavy hair is pulled back. She wears large, thin-rimmed circular aviator-style eyeglasses. Dr. Allen looks directly forward into the camera with a neutral, calm, and composed expression, conveying a sense of quiet determination, focus, and intellectual strength. The composition uses natural, soft lighting that minimizes harsh shadows on her face. The overall mood is serious, professional, and dignified, underscoring her historic significance as a trailblazer for women in medicine and surgery.

Geophysicist & space physicist Marcia Neugebauer made the first direct solar wind measurements via instruments on the Mariner 2 spacecraft. She developed instruments used on Earth-orbiting satellites, Apollo lunar experiments & the Giotto mission to Halley’s Comet. Born #OTD in 1932. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white historical photograph of pioneering geophysicist and space physicist Marcia Neugebauer (born September 27, 1932) working at her desk during the mid-20th century. Sitting in an office setting, she leans forward slightly over her desk, looking directly at the camera with a calm, intelligent, and focused expression. She has short, bobbed light hair and wears a short-sleeved, collared white button-up blouse adorned with subtle vertical embroidered details down the front. In her right hand, she holds a pencil over large documents and charts with plotted scientific data curves spread out on the desk before her. To her right sits a large, vintage mechanical calculating machine with columns of buttons, characteristic of the 1960s computing era. The background features window blinds and office storage, creating an environment of rigorous research. The image captures the historical significance of a trailblazing woman in STEM whose work with these charts and calculations would confirm the existence of the solar wind via the Mariner 2 spacecraft.

Soubrette [soo-BRET] (n.) 1. A pert, coquettish, or mischievous young woman or maidservant, especially one who engages in intrigue. 2. A theatrical character of this type, or an actress who plays such a role in a play or opera.
A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme featuring the word “Soubrette,” illustrated with a black-and-white Victorian engraving of a young maidservant in a long dress and apron standing beside a seated woman in an elegant parlor. The accompanying text defines a soubrette as a pert, coquettish, or mischievous young woman or maidservant, or an actress who plays such a role. An example sentence describes Miss Tilly Thistlebum, a mischievous actress at London’s Gaiety Theatre whose talent for theatrical intrigue is rivaled only by her propensity for pursuing it offstage.

Here's the real Bess Houdini, accomplished teenage magician, dancer, singer & independent firecracker, photographed in the 1890s ... & how she was portrayed by Janet Leigh in the 1950s movie. Read Bess's real story & see rare pics of her in my new book, Spooky Ladies, out soon.
An 18 year old Bess Houdini (maybe younger TBH) with short, unruly dark curls wearing a high necked blouse & huge puffy sleeves in about 1895 when she was an equal partner at Coney Island shows with her new husband Erich Weiss as the Houdinis. Janet Leigh in high heels, fishnets, a shiny show-girl/stripper style corset with tassels and frills and blonde hair as Bess at the same age in the 1953 film about her husband, portraying her as a timid and frightened assistant probe to hysterics.
