Hi, I’m Riley! I write bestsellers, talk ‘til my jaw hurts about paleontology, and sniff out fossils wherever I can find them. Check out my latest. 🌱 🦕 us.macmillan.com/author/riley...

The weird scissor-toothed shark, Edestus and straight-shelled ammonites. Illustration for the forthcoming book. I don't know what the bubbles mean beyond the fact that I looks drawing them.

Hi I don’t talk about my job but it seems there’s going to be a big deportation swipe going down tomorrow so this is important! Lush stores are safe havens. They are able to hold anyone seeking safety in their backroom if needed. We have signs telling us what to say/don’t say to ICE

Just to keep things ticking over while I wrestle with Christmas deadlines, here's #paleoart of the American mastodon, sans hair, for which there is virtually no fossil evidence. Mastodon were not denizens of cold climates, like mammoths, and they may have looked very different in life. #sciart
A large elephant-like animal wades through a misty swamp at sunset. The sky is orange with blue encroaching from above, against which large orange and red cypress trees stand out. White egrets fly around the mastodon, which has a grey-purple body and orange face. Its tusks curve into the air, while at its feet are projecting cypress "knees".

A Camarasaurus standing in front of a slightly obscured red orange sun. Most of the piece is green. There is subtle striping on the dinosaur’s back. Its eyes are the same color as the sun.

I almost forgot this #FossilFriday. The T. rex at the Acad of Nat Sci is their biggest complete dinosaur mount, but in front of it is an "Ultrasauros" (Supersaurus) leg. You can already tell it dwarfs T. rex. Imagine the whole animal standing in front of it...

I called this piece "The Visitation" and features the infamous Spinosaurus aegyptiacus a tapejarid pterosaur that the adult won't believe the baby saw when they wake up. 13" x 38" prints are available for purchase on my website www.emmalerae.com
And adult Spinosaurus sleeps on a fallen log as dawn breaks in Cretaceous Africa. Sitting on the head of the adult is a baby Spinosaurus watching a tapejarid decide to land on the log right in front of them.Detail image show the head of the adult Spinosaurus and the baby perched on top.Detail image of the tapejarid pterosaur with the sun shining though the membrane of its wing revealing the blood vessels.

Stomatosuchids are insane animals, Stomatosuchus in particular. The skull itself measures around 2 meters and by god I hope more material comes to light. #stomatosuchidae #sciart
A comparisson of the three known Stomatosuchids, croc-relatives with long, surfboard-like snouts. The smaller species are both part of the genus Laganosuchus, their skulls less than a meter long. The skull of Stomatosuchus, the largest form, is over twice that long and measures around 2 meters, taller than an adult human.

The Herd
A long exposure photograph captures an ethereal scene of an elk herd grazing in a misty field at night, under the glow of the Northern Lights. The sky is painted with a faint green and purple aurora, shimmering between patches of cloud cover.

Stars twinkle through the clouds, adding to the serene nighttime atmosphere. In the background, a dense line of evergreens spans the horizon, their silhouettes standing dark against the luminous sky.

The elk, faintly illuminated in the foreground, graze peacefully, their outlines softened by the mist that lingers close to the ground. The lush green and autumnal golden hues of the trees add depth to the scene, blending with the natural colors of the sky and the mysterious beauty of the aurora borealis.

Happy #FossilFriday! Sinoceratops is a centrosaurine ceratopsian from Campanian China, characterized in part by a series of at least 10 frill horns (epiossifications) that curl foward over the frill. It's also the only known ceratopsid from Asia!
