Ultimately, what people should really be taking home from looking at politics at home and abroad right now is: they‘ve given up. They have all the reports. The ones about the water bankruptcy, the climate catastrophe, mass extinctions, habitat loss, the AMOC, all of it. No real mitigations.

I don’t know why this needs explaining but art is NOT AN EXTRAVAGANCE. Art is AS ESSENTIAL to the human experience as breathing. Which is also something this government doesn’t seem to value much.
