THREAD. Did you know that Minneapolis police deployed 101 personnel to a 7-person vigil held one morning at Renee Good's memorial? The cops generated $1.92 million in overtime cash for themselves.

the end effect of "look we're totally on your side but we just can't stand up for you right now, you're too much of a hot topic because republicans are attacking you" is "we will stand up for you, and fight for your rights, as soon as republicans pick a different target"

It's playing out this way *because* Dem candidates are doing well in the polls. GOP campaigns are going all-in on transphobia and Dem consultants are clearly advising their candidates to respond by throwing trans people under the bus. This dynamic is very obvious where I'm at in Iowa.

grimly fascinating how trump is chiefly animated by his fear of dying without leaving a lasting mark, but he's so devoid of humanity, so spiritually corroded, the idea of something that lasts because people WANT IT TO never crosses his mind. he can only imagine leaving a wreckage too heavy to move

lmfaaaao I just remembered how Calkins was so despised by the readership of the Seattle Times that they had to put a note under all his articles telling readers to cut back on calling him names because his mother also reads the paper

Another banger from the man behind one of the stupidest paragraphs I have ever read about transportation: www.cato.org/sites/cato.o...
Randall O'Toole writes for the Cato Institute: "At the average occupancy rate of 1.6 people per car, 2,000 vehicles per hour represents 3,200 people per hour. But this is an unfair comparison with trains operating at full capacity. Assuming that the average car has five seats, a freeway lane filled with cars at capacity can more 10,000 people per hour.

I just saw this reposted and I wanted to add: Many people note Trump fixates on the 80s-90s when he peaked as a celebrity real estate mogul. He made comebacks with The Apprentice and then entered politics, but his brain is ossified. He seems not to have learned anything new since the late 90s.

The really jarring thing about this genre of video isn't just walking up to people and bothering them, interrupting their activities, filming them without permission, etc. it's the way they always become wildly confrontational and aggrieved if they get the slightest pushback.

Trumpism embodies the essence of American conservatism in many different ways, and one of the most important is their way of responding to self-inflicted or imaginary problems by imposing state power and cruelly persecuting innocent people. They love to take revenge on people who did nothing at all.

It's called Battle for Sevastopol, but maybe it isn't widely known outside Russia because of the timing. It was released in 2015 right after the annexation of Crimea, when the Donbas conflict was heating up. The Ukrainian release was retitled "Unbreakable" for that reason.

This is supposed to be some kind of national exhibition for the 250th and the entire setup is obviously and vastly inferior to the annual state fair in any given Midwest state. Even regional affairs like the Mississippi Valley Fair are much bigger and better than this.

There are people who aren't already trapped in Gotham who move there voluntarily. Renee Montoya's parents immigrated from DR. They looked around Santo Domingo and said, "This is no place to start a family. We need a city where an evil clown kills 300 people with nerve gas every single year."

It’s one of those things where the easiest question back to someone claiming a breakthrough is: do you think Iran would let Trump speak for them or speak to what was agreed upon ever?

It isn't hard to figure out and it isn't deep. He has a very long record as a public figure specifically with respect to real estate, construction, and aesthetics. He is simply a very vain, narcissistic boor who likes to put his name on big, gaudy buildings.

🧵 but IMO worth it to read to the end My dad had a long career as a small-town lawyer. I asked him if he ever had a Perry Mason moment. Just once, he said. There was this cop in my home town who was so terrible they eventually fired him. It is very hard to get fired from a rural small town PD.

I was mulling this over, and this is what I landed on: I think it's about campaign strategy rather than Newsom in particular. My guess is the institutional Party plans to run a 2026 and 2028 national strategy as a soulless triangulating reactionary centrist campaign like Newsom is running now.

US Border Agents Intentionally Stepped in Front of Moving Vehicles to Justify Shooting at Them
An internal review of the US Border Patrol raises serious questions about the agency’s use-of-force policy.

It's kind of wild to look back at when he turned an interview into unhinged flailing at Ta-Nehisi Coates and humiliated himself so badly that he was officially reprimanded by his bosses at the time. That was a successful audition to become lead anchor. It's why he has Cronkite's chair right now!

Growing up I was a huge Orwell fan, like I own and have read all his books and his 4-volume collected writings. My single favorite thing of the whole is probably his 1940 essay "Boys' Weeklies" which was about twopenny story magazines for boys that were incredibly popular at the time.

This is a Walmart Supercenter in my community, adjacent to a large apartment complex that caters to low-income renters. I highlighted the pedestrian access in green. It is (A) circuitous and (B) doesn't even access the business so requires an extended walk through parking lots and frontage roads.
An overhead satellite photo of a very large apartment complex immediately abutting a shopping center, with a Walmart Supercenter the closest retail establishment to the complex. Sidewalk access is highlighted to show that it never actually approaches any of the businesses.

It feels weird to me whenever Yarvin pops up in my feed. Back when he started blogging I was in my early 20s posting on forums, and some of my online friends were nerds who loved sci fi and history and did stuff like semi-ironically supporting Habsburg restoration as a bit. We were dorks.

One of my pet theories is that one reason for lasting bitterness about the public health measures is that we normally humor people who have bad, incorrect ideas, but temporarily we couldn't afford to do that. They're going to have feelings about it for the rest of their lives.

I just realized something that I never put together before but feels in some way important: the Dirty Harry film series and the classic Columbo TV movies were contemporary works. I feel like you could get something from putting them in conversation, but AFAIK it hasn't been done seriously.
