Foster carers under fire: Scapegoats for a broken system?
England’s foster carers are leaving the system. When a child is seriously injured in foster care, an investigation is triggered, but is the system stacked against carers when an allegation occurs?

🚨Department for Education employee found guilty. Yesterday at the Department for Education I chaired an impromptu mock LADO investigation where we notified a DfE employee that he had an allegation against him.

Today we head to London. Foster carers from 3 different organisations meeting with the DfE and Children's Minister. It may well be tokenism. It may well be consultation box ticking in their minds. Who knows.

If you have any feedback or comments on the Department for Education consultations documents please let us know. As our members know we have been invited to a meeting with the Department for Education and the Children's Minister. Optimism for real change isn't really on my radar though.

Isn't it lovely how busy everyone suddenly is on the back of the foster carer retention crisis? Holding conferences. Having consultation events and press launches. Making money.

Morning. I'm waiting with baited breath for the next big announcement for foster carers. You know what it's going to be? Teleportation devices or time travel equipment. How else could we function in MacAlister's brave new world?

I've just seen this post on Instagram by an independent fostering agency. I've no idea if their foster carers feel well supported by them, however as they're not an IFA who appear to be on my radar maybe that's a good sign.

It's been another very busy week supporting our members all over the UK. We've had a number of great outcomes for fostering families and I have no doubt that our presence in meetings leads to fairer treatment and better outcomes.

🚨Wow. Here's another massive flaw with the DfE grants for foster carers scheme. We've been approached to support a kinship family caring for their grandchildren long term. They've been living in an overcrowded situation for years. The local authority have agreed a grant for an extension.

From the man who has been actively blocking the voices of many foster carers over the past few weeks. Having enough bedrooms isn't the only or main consideration for how many children live with a fostering family. How many different school runs can be accommodated?

It's incredibly disappointing to watch the current Children's Minister actively silencing the voices of foster carers. Comments from foster carers are being removed from his social media posts.

Merry Christmas from all of the team at FosterSupport. Christmas can actually be a really difficult day for fostering families. I don't think that is something that most people understand as the fostering advertising sells the idea of happy children enjoying Christmas with a new family.

This from X is a striking example of what I argue in today’s column. Reform and the Tories are out here gleefully saying disabled people on Motability should be forced to drive a 3-wheeler, like a scarlet letter. The stigma is not an accident - it’s the design.
