Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

🌲Permian Mallorca🐾🦎 During the Permian period Mallorca was located on the Equator and was not an island, but part of the mainland. Some terrestrial creatures are known from that time, mostly from the tracks they left behind #paleoart #Permian #Mallorca 🧵Thread for additional explanation
Drawing showing the biodiversity from the Permian of Mallorca, in particular from the Port des Canonge Formation. From left to right, and from top to bottom:
- Shoot and tree of a plant, possibly Feysia sp.
- Storm clouds bring pouring rain to a river valley at the end of the dry season
- Conchostracans similar to Triops (representing the ichnogenus Cruziana) move through the bottom of a pool
- A mother varanopid and her offspring (representing the ichnogenus Dromopus) rest on a branch
- A roachoid insect comes out from a burrow (representing the ichnofossil Palaeophycus tubularis)
- Tramuntanasaurus tiai eating some horsetails
- Early synapsids of different types (representing the ichnigenus Dimetropus) gather at a waterhole in the dry season
- A gorgonopsian tries to catch a Tramuntanasaurus, with the latter escaping by shedding its tail
- A large moradisaurine walks through a lush riverside in the rainy season. Smaller reptiles and insects appear nearby

Very nice example of fluvial cross-stratification and succeeding channels cross-cutting one another in Upper Triassic (Norian-Rhaetian) sandstones of the Löwenstein Formation (southern Germany). By far the best example of fluvial sandstone channels (highlighted below) I've seen so far personally.
Photo of an geological outcrop in the Löwenstein Formation (Upper Triassic, Norian-Rhaetian) of southern Germany.
Various sandstone beds with cross-stratification above a claystone horizone are visbile. The sandstone beds are truncated by overlaying channels.Same photo as above, but with the different sandstone beds highlighted in different colours and bedding-orientation drawn in.

This #paleoart shows 3 views of the Devonian brachiopod fossil Paraspirifer bownockeri; one is reconstructed w/ some epifauna and boreholes. These are fun to find; they're an impressive size (for brachiopods). I had an excellent specimen to use as a reference for this painting. #FossilFriday #sciart
Detailed color illustration showing 3 different views of the same specimen. Two at the bottom are the unreconstructed fossil from different angles. The reconstruction at the top shows the brachiopod in life position, with 9 visible boreholes and the common epibionts Cornulites and a bryozoan. The shell has pinkish and whitish horizontal stripes and the valves are slightly agape, with cirri lining the opening.

Out in @nature.com today, we shake up the ornithischian family tree. Remember those weird Late Cretaceous iguanodontians, the rhabdodontids? Well they're weird because they aren't iguanodontians. They're ceratopsians. Well, at least some of them are... www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A hidden diversity of ceratopsian dinosaurs in Late Cretaceous Europe - Nature
New results indicate that rhabdodontids and the previously described Ajkaceratops are actually distinctive European ceratopsians, a group better known from Asia and North America.

New material of Ajkaceratops cements its identity as a ceratopsian, but adds a new wrinkle. It turns out that many european ornithischians previously classified as iguanodontians may actually be ceratopsians! New paper by @tweetisaurus.bsky.social et al., that I provided art for (link in reply).

Finally finished this reconstruction of Iguanodon. Really proud of the final results. Gave it really pronounced shoulder scales with the idea that they'd help with protecting from the thumb claws in intraspecific combat. #paleoart #Iguanodon #ornithischian #dinosaur
A depiction of Iguanodon, drawn traditionally but painted digitally.
Here it has been depicted with orange and rusty brown hues on the head and neck. Reaching the body, the brown fades into a dark gray with a lighter, creamy underside of the body.
The area around the shoulders and the forearm features large, robust scales. The attachment point for the arms, however, has smaller chain mail-like scales. Sparse, spikier scales run down the top of the neck and back, and the underside of the neck has large, rugose caruncles. The rest of the body past the torso is fairly uniform and featureless.
