There was a time when RTS games were moving from 2D to 3D where a review would ding a game for looking "ancient" because it wasn't doing mind-blowing CnC Generals-tier 3D. 20 years later, all those early 3D titles look like shit, and a developer can take any approach if they're good enough.

Absolutely no shade thrown at any hexagon-frame manufacturers, especially not when comparing themselves to such masterclass plastic slingers like Bandai!

It's come up a few times recently from both customers and in speaking with some of our outsource manufacturing customers (we do quite a lot of that these days behind the scenes!) Why do we (and folks like Bandai) have round runners on our plastic frames instead of those squiggly, half-hexagon types?

The answer is physics. High impact polystyrene (HIPS) is a plastic that flows into a metal mold under extreme pressure in liquid form. As everyone from the ancient Romans on down have known, liquid likes flowing through round pipes. It's the path of least resistance and the best conduit to ensure movement and good flow.

Those half-hexagon type runners are actually making it harder to get plastic into the parts. And that's why you'll sometimes see extremely enlarged reservoir areas near the gates (the spot where the plastic flows into the part - the spot where you use your trusty clippers). This placement of reservoirs is typically done when a part isn't filling properly.

I've always been amazed at the skill of our engineering team. Our type of injection molds are some of the most difficult plastic tooling to design. It's a challenge because it combines things that most mold makers can do individually quite well - but are a nightmare when you combine them: 1. organically shaped parts, 2. very small parts, and 3. a LOT of unique parts.

Some mold makers take over a dozen tries to get a mold to the point where it fills reliably. I think the worst I've ever seen with ours is 6x - but 90% of them are ready for production by the 2nd test shot. Sometimes the odd miscast can slip through (typically when first starting a new run as the mold is being dialed in), but overall I've been really happy with the quality of our parts.

As we grow and increase the rate of new plastic set releases, we've been spending a lot of time refining our internal processes and seeing where we can be more efficient. This is going to let us bring things to hard plastic that no other company would dream of doing in anything but metal, resin, or stl/3D print. It's going to be a lot of fun!
