His mail away catalog features a unique gun that's still comically large. But, might have been a better fit for him. There's never been any explanation as to why it was changed.

1994 Joseph Colton Mail Away catalog featuring the 3 3/4" figure with an original, unique rifle that was never actually released.

Tonight's review: Hasbro G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero G.I. Joe Action Figure from 1994! 16bit.com/fotd/261007-... I stumbled on it at a collector store and likely overpaid for it... but I've also wanted one for a couple of decades and said "eh, why not." The head is great.

People dump on the kiddo Hasbro Star Wars lines from the Disney era, they are wrong to do this. Some good figures came out that people ignored. Check out Solo: A Star Wars Story Moloch. He wasn't expensive then, he's affordable now, nice and weird. figureoftheday.blogspot.com/2018/07/star...

Toy photo: Big Ben, in his 1993 brown mail-in repaint, walks through the grass carrying a big machine gun (1987 Tunnel Rat's, which Hasbro packaged with the mail in kind of randomly, but I like the combo).

GI Joe pic of the day: Where did Techno-Vipers' snazzy purple uniforms come from? Well, once upon a time, Cobra technical specialists wore purple collar tabs and web gear flashes, to distinguish them from officers. Eventually, the Tele- and Techno-Vipers adapted this into their own uniforms.

Toy photo: two Cobra officers with dark uniforms and purple trim work on a machine-gun PAC/RAT while Mindbender and a Tele-Viper look on. a Stinger is in the background and two Cobra Troopers are hauling away a dismantled missile PAC/RAT.

When I see this figure, all I can think of is that Hasbro recalled the mold and then never released a full BAT. Had they just left the mold in India, we'd have been buying 100's of $4 Funskool BATs in 2001. Such a miss....

The goblins in the animated Lord of the Rings movies. I'd hear the music in my nightmares for years. There was also a classic cartoon where a criminal who was a shadow came into a house on a stormy night. I can't find it, anymore. But, it scared the crap out of me.

Operation Recall is now funding YEAR 2 figures on Kickstarter! I had the pleasure of illustrating Runback's desert look (and designing the deco for the figure!) Not only is her Desert Ops figure up for grabs but I have two more concepts coming in year two - Larvae and Deadzone! More on them soon!

digital illustration. Runback, a female Japanese soldier tosses a fresh magazine to the viewer, who has an outstretched gloved hand ready to catch it. Runback is wearing her fresh new desert camouflage pants and boonie hat, paired with a dark armored jacket that matches her boots. She wears a pair of augmented reality goggles stashed on top of her hat, with a small device strapped to her thigh with a glowing screen. She wields a HOWA Type 89 assault rifle, and is assisted by PAC-DOG a quadrupedal robot carrying a large pack of ammunition and supplies slung on it's underside, as well as a larger crate loaded on top.

The Steel Brigade wasn't really an army builder in the US. But, many European collectors cite catalog images like this as their impetus to army build the Steel Brigades. They then imported that to US collectors who then turned a $5 figure into a $40 figure in just a couple of short years. #GIJoe
