There are different kinds, these ones connect over SPI and give you 8 outputs per chip and are chain-able up to 3 to give a total of 24 outputs using just the 1 SPI bus worth of pins.adafruit.com74HC595 Shift Register - 3 packAdd lots more outputs to a microcontroller system with chainable shift registers.
